Royal Road (originally Royal Road Legends or RoyalRoadL) is an English-language web fiction platform founded in 2014. It is closely associated with the LitRPG and progression fantasy genres and has launched several works that later achieved mainstream adaptations or publishing success.[1]

History

Royal Road began as a forum-based community site called Royal Road Legends. In August 2018, it rebranded under the shorter domain royalroad.com.[2] By the mid-2020s, it had become a prominent web novel community in English-language fiction.[1]

Notable works

Several high-profile works originated as serials on Royal Road:

  • He Who Fights with Monsters by Travis Deverell (Shirtaloon), adapted into graphic novels by Vault Comics.[3]
  • Defiance of the Fall by J.F. Brink (TheFirstDefier), acquired by Aethon Books.[4]
  • Mother of Learning by Domagoj Kurmaic (nobody103), later published in book form.[5]
  • Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman, which Publishers Weekly identified as a leading LitRPG series. Its adaptations include a television series in development by Universal International Studios and Fuzzy Door, a Webtoon comic, tabletop RPGs, and a graphic novel project.[1][6]

Reception

Royal Road is frequently cited in trade coverage as a key platform elevating web serials and particularly LitRPG/progression fantasy to mainstream publishing and multimedia markets.[1]
