Rubén Caballero

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Rubén Caballero (20 December 1967) is a Spanish/Canadian/American engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He has experience in product design and wireless engineering working at Silicon Valley startups and then joined Apple in 2005 to work on the development of the first iPhone[1]. He is known for his work as one of the founding leaders of the iPhone hardware team.[2], parlaying that work into other products such as the iPad, Macs, Apple Watch, and Airpods. In addition, Caballero founded Apple’s Wireless Design & Technology group, which included R&D, roadmap, architecture, design, validation, certification, regulatory, field and production/factory tests for all Apple hardware products [2]

Education and early life[edit]

Rubén Caballero was born in 1967 in Santiago, Chile to Spanish parents. In 1973, he moved to Québec, Canada[2]. He attended Collège Laval and Collège Jean-De-Brébeuf and received a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal1 in 1991[2]. He completed a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico State University1 in 1996. In June 2019, Caballero received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Montréal (Québec, Canada);[3].

Career[edit]

Caballero began his career by joining the Canadian military in 1988 where he served for 13 years. He was appointed Captain in 1994 and in the following four years, he designed and created a system for the F18 Fighter aircraft that acquires biomedical data (including ECG, EMG, head/heart blood pressure transducers and ear opacity/pulse transducers) from the passenger in the back seat of the fighter jet[2].

Following his time in the Canadian military, Caballero spent the next 4 years working at wireless startups in Silicon Valley[2] overseeing design projects and leading the teams working on them. In 2001, Caballero was hired by Tropian Inc, a startup that developed multimode radio frequency integrated circuits and solutions for wireless devices. As the company’s Director of System Engineering & Products[4], he built the system engineering team within the company, which consisted of RF, HW, antenna, SW, algorithm, test and application engineers. He oversaw the team performing prototyping, integration and testing of GPRS/GSM modules and handsets including GMSK and EDGE technology[5].

In 2004, Caballero then joined Radial Labs Inc. as their Director of System Engineering. In his role at this startup, he designed and created innovative products and technology for wireless networked audio components and devices - specifically developing devices that would wirelessly transmit songs to speakers[4].

In 2005, Caballero began his 14-year tenure at Apple, culminating as Vice President of Engineering[6]. In his role at Apple, he worked on the first-generation iPhone and iPad, ultimately expanding into all Apple hardware solutions such as Apple TV and Airport products, MACs and Airpods[7]. As the iPhone evolved, Caballero oversaw new antenna designs and rigorous testing[8]. He also lead Project OGRS - a scrapped project that would allow for a “walkie talkie feature” for offline iPhone messaging[9].

In addition to his work on Apple devices, Caballero built the company’s wireless groups into an organization of over 1,000 engineers in laboratories across 26 countries[2]. The engineers were responsible for all facets of wireless design, including antenna design, RF architecture and design, wireless validation, EMC, certification/regulatory, field engineering and production/factory testing. Prior to his departure, Caballero was leading Apple’s 5G modem efforts[10].

Since his departure from Apple, Caballero has joined Boards of Directors and Advisory Boards for the following companies:

(a)- Keyssa, a leader in high-speed mmWave contactless connectivity. Rubén joined as its Chief Wireless Strategist[11]

(b)- Resonant Inc., a leader in transforming the way Radio Frequency (RF) front-ends are being designed and delivered for mobile handset and wireless devices[4].

Rubén Caballero is a member of The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta since joining in 1999.

Awards and recognition[edit]

(2018) CNET, One of the 20 Most Influential Latinos in Tech[12]

Caballero is the inventor of over 450 worldwide patents and applications[3].

Given his time served in the Canadian military, Caballero received a Canadian Forces’ Decoration in June 2000[13]

Personal life[edit]

Caballero is married with two children.[2]. He speaks English, Spanish and French fluently[2]
