Rub & Tug
Rub & Tug is an upcoming American television series based on the life of Dante "Tex" Gill, produced by New Regency and written by Our Lady J.
Production
On July 2, 2018, it was announced that New Regency had won the bidding war to acquire the rights of an "American Hustle-like" true story film, Rub & Tug, set in the 1970s Pittsburgh, about Jean Marie Gill, who took on the mob in the city and became the crime kingpin. The $30 million budgeted film, set around the romance between Gill and her girlfriend Cynthia, would be directed by Rupert Sanders from the script by Gary Spinelli, and would star Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. It would be produced by Joel Silver, Tobey Maguire, Johansson, Matthew Plouffe, Spinelli, and Jonathan Lia, through their Silver Pictures, Material Pictures, and These Pictures banners.[1]
Johansson responded to the comment of April Reign about casting her as a trans male character in the film, saying "tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment."[2]
Trace Lysette, a transgender actress, also tweeted "Oh word?? So you can continue to play us but we can't play y'all?" about casting Johansson for the transgender role.[3] Following the considerable debate among the trans communities, Johansson left the film on July 13, saying "in light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project."[4]
After more than two years of deadlock, the project was revived by New Regency as a television series with Our Lady J attached to write. The studio was committed to a transgender actor in the role of Gill.[5]
