Rubans Rouges Dance was created by dancer-choreographer, “esteemed performer, activist, and founder”[4] Noelle Rose Andressen in 2009. The company’s name is French for “Red Ribbons”. Red Ribbons™ is also the title of the company’s flagship dance about Miss Andressen’s child molestation story that launched it initially. [5] The company performs modern dance and contemporary ballet. Its trademark is “multi-media dance drama™” and performs for the audience to “feel the experience™”. [1]

Rubans Rouges Dance uses story lines, particularly real life tales from its Artistic Director’s life, to give messages of hope to audience members. They also expand upon these dances in their repertory in book form authored by Miss Andressen herself. These books are called the Dance Warrior® Series, Red Ribbons™ Shattered Innocence was published on this date: February 21, 2017[6] [7]

Current[edit]

Artistic Director, Noelle Rose Andressen, has served as the company’s leader since its inception. She studied at the Alvin Ailey School in New York and was nominated Performance Artist of the Year 2012.[8]

She is also the lead female dancer in her company who received and EMA Media Award for producing as well as being EMMY (NATAS) nominated as a Music Composer/Singer, Producer and Writer.[9] [10]

Kristopher Kale is the company’s Executive Managing Director who also scores most of the company’s music which makes it a true husband-wife team. They met performing at the Bob Hope McCallum in Palm Desert and he too is an Emmy nominated artist for his music compositions[11]

Their company features dancers and performers from ages 18-80, all races, sexes, forms, religions, identities, disabilities, body types and sizes. The company dances about child abuse, ageism, racism and its effects, violence, cancer, empowering women, equal rights and many other social topics.[12] The ensemble also spends time raising awareness by dancing for charities and helping hands-on. They also dance to share the joy of entertainment and help people. [6] [13]

Company History[edit]

Rubans Rouges Dance existed prior as Noelle Andressen Dance for 8 years[2] It was performed in Beauty from Ashes TV Film on TLNetwork [14] and distributed internationally in 2007. [15] [16]

The very first formal performance on stage for Rubans Rouges Dance™ was in January 2009. “Red Ribbons™” was performed in a studio setting initially in December of 2008 as a 4 minute 1 second dance gift for her ballet instructor. In the winter of 2008, the company was named after Miss Andressen’s child molestation incident where her grandmother did a ritual of attaching a red ribbon with a Catholic patron saint charm to a safety pin and fastened it to her underwear. It was her husband that inspired her to name the company by using the French words: Rubans Rouges which literally translates to red ribbons.[17] A special feature in the Associated Press about the red ribbons story and the molestation story went international in the winter of 2017 [18]

In the fall of 2012 the company created “Awakenings & Beginnings™ Dance Festival”, it premiered in January 2013.[19]

2013 the company traveled and performed nationally in Brooklyn, New York; they presented the piece “Coeur de Verre”.[20]

2016 the festival grew and became “Awakenings & Beginnings International Dance Festival”, [6]

2018 Awakenings & Beginnings International Dance Festival™ celebrated women to honor those who were marching in downtown Los Angeles. The festival's theme was "Truth - All artists had their interpretation. There is no wrong answer only good art" to quote Noelle Andressen the Artistic Director of the festival. Growth was experienced this year again as the festival ran from Jan 6 – 27 with master classes, community programs, dancer development and education, strong women ensemble dance performances.[21]

Awakenings and Beginnings Dance Festival™ History[edit]

Rubans Rouges Dance hosts and Executive Produces an annual dance festival in Los Angeles that is co-produced by Emmy nominated Producers: Noelle Rose Andressen (Kale married name) and her husband Kristopher Kale.[22][23] It began in the Fall of 2012 and has since presented this dance festival traditionally in January starting in 2013. It is host to Established and Emerging Professional Artists and samples the company’s dance works.[24] It is the first dance festival of the year in Los Angeles. The festival features modern and contemporary dance styles along with classical pointe ballet, jazz, cirque, classical tap, lyrical, Butoh, and performance & movement art. [25] It reaches out to the community's under-served youth with mentor-ship programs, educational outreach programs, dance happenings and events, performances, and gives children of all cultures an opportunity to perform in the MOSAIC program.

In 2013 the festival began a matinee and evening program to showcase local artists.[26] The Board of Rubans Rouges Dance also began presenting the “Awakening Award” this year which is presented to top performers and artists in dance. This award was presented to many integral people in the dance industry including Lois Greenfield and Lori Belilove and the Isadora Duncan Dance Company; Ms. Andressen was also a recipient of this award for her leadership which was presented by celebrity guest speakers.[27]

In 2018 on September 15, Awakenings & Beginnings International Dance Festival went to New York City and premiered "Awakenings & Beginnings: The Empowered Woman-NYC Special Edition" in Manhattan at Alvin Ailey's theatre called the Ailey Citigroup Theatre Joan Weill Center for Dance. This presentation showcased female choreographers and social issues such as breast cancer, rape, freedom of expression with works by Rubans Rouges Dance including: "Red Ribbons", Rosewood, Coeur de Verre, and a solo from Lori Belilove & Isadora Duncan Dance Company.[28]

Other Interesting facts about “Awakenings & Beginnings Dance Festival™” is that it has made the #1 pick of LA Weekly and listed in the top 5 several times[29][26] and also by Cultural Weekly in which it had two separate shows in two separate locations for its 5th installment in Hollywood at the Barnsdall Gallery Theater and in Lincoln Heights at Diavolo Performance Space. [30] In January 2018, the festival was also listed as a pick in the LA Times. It was presented at Diavolo Performance Space for the closing night.[31]

Red Ribbons[edit]

“Red Ribbons” is oldest and initial part of the Rubans Rouges Dance repertoire choreographed by Noelle Rose Andressen. The copyright is co-owned by The Board Members of Rubans Rouges Dance, Andressen and Kristopher Kale. The dance is based on Andressen’s dark past about her overcoming the horrors of child molestation and the healing of a fractured psyche. It is referred to as a “dance drama” with dance, film, theater, and live music scored by Emmy nominated composer Kristopher Kale.[32] In 2013 Red Ribbons was expanded and presented uncensored as a 45 minute length dance piece in a concert: “Red Ribbons and Memories”. The piece had a parental warning because the subject matter: child abuse and molestation was very mature and controversial. This dance piece was intended to help many women face the abuse in their past and help inform children how to speak up against abusers.[33]

LA Weekly supported “Red Ribbons™ and Memories” with a mini editorial. The full length version was performed in its entire form for the first time uncensored for this presentation.[34]

In 2016 Red Ribbons™ was performed again uncensored as an expanded 50 minute dance drama that used dance, drama, live music and film. [35] It was also then made into a book titled after the dance "Red Ribbons" that explores the shattering of one's innocence. It depicts the chronological time line of the continual development of "Red Ribbons" and the impact it had on the audience, society, and Rubans Rouges Dance as a company.

In 2017, Miss Andressen’s story about her "Red Ribbons™" and how she turned a bad event into a positive mind-set, was selected by editors as an Editor’s Pick for Y Mag. She shares how her "Red Ribbons" has encouraged other abused women by dancing about it in her choreography. It was also used to communicate to her teacher who had helped her rebuild her body after surviving breast cancer.[36]

December of 2017 Noelle Rose Andressen’s story about her “Red Ribbons™” dance also went viral and gained international attention. Factually, it was featured in over 250 news stations and news media online and print picked up the story and ran it. The media shared how her grandfather raped her when she was a child and the significance of red ribbons and her dance. She shared about finding strength and sharing her story and for women to find their voices. Richard Vogel did a photo shoot downtown Los Angeles with Miss Andressen.[37] The “Red Ribbons™” dance news coverage depicted how and why it was created, it revealed her past abuse and how she overcame it [38]
