Ruby Sky Stiler
[1][2] Ruby Sky Stiler is an artist from Brooklyn who practices work focused on the compression of cultural references, and the integration between the monumental and the cast-off. Her sculptural processes were inspired by a detailed analysis of authority, value, and taste, and by the synthesis of images of architecture, handicraft, design, and the history of art, such as the bas-reliefs of the Hellenic period, concrete buildings of Le Corbusier, ceramics of Picasso, the Native American ceramics of Matisse, the monochrome assemblies of Louise Nevelson, and the sculptures of a municipality. Stiler's sculptures took the forms of vessels, reliefs, and female nudes in earlier work and employed foam and acrylic resin. The results looked like brick, marble, and ceramics, reinforced by their iconography, which showed a hand-built technique, copied from the ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Modern Mexican pottery traditions. From the first experiment with familiar art materials, Stiler's hydro plaster wall reliefs (2013) developed into a more in-depth study of the history of classical plaster castings and the rise and fall of their importance and significance over time. Stiler conjured a spectral reference to objects which no longer exist by using discarded compositional features and fragments contained in her studio. She also has solo exhibits in The Suburban, Oak Park, IL, Portland Institute for Modern Art, OR, Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, New York, The Berman Museum and the Wellin Museum of Art in Clinton, and New York, and has a wide range of other venues. Ruby Sky Stiler has exhibited in The Aldrich Museum for Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT, and Locust Ventures.[3]
