Rukiye Bala Hodo (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist. "charm" and "youth"; 30 January 1955 - 4 November 2023) also called Bala Sultan[1][2][3] was member of the Ottoman Dynasty as the daughter of İsmail Cemalettin Hodo and Behiye Emel Nuricihan Hanımsultan.
Early Life
Rukiye was born on 30 January 1955 in Istanbul[4][5][6]as the daughter of İsmail Cemalettin Hodo (1900-1977) and Behiye Emel Nuricihan Hanımsultan (born 15 June 1925) she is the middle child of the couple and had elder sister Banu Hodo (born 1952) and younger brother Nazim Hodo (born 1958)[7].She was the great-granddaughter of Mehmed V the 35th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.[8]Rukiye was also descendant of 35th Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire Sokollu Mehmed Pasha who was Grand Vizier from 1565 until his assassination in 1579.[9][10]
Career
Rukiye graduated from the German High School and then from the Department of German Philology at Istanbul University and was fluent in german.She starred in commercials for many products from hair products to perfume and worked as a model during the 1970’s.[11] Rukiye became interested in art, primarily painting, after she was injured in a traffic accident in Kuruçeşme.[12]
Legal issues
In 2019 Rukiye filed a lawsuit against turkish commercial banking company İşbank which aimed to determine whether her great-grandfather had purchased shares in the Ottoman İtibar-ı Milli Bankası, which was established in 1917 and later merged into İşbank in 1927.According to the lawsuit filed in the Istanbul Commercial Court, Rukiye claimed that Sultan Mehmed V had acquired 200 shares in the Ottoman İtibar-ı Milli Bankası (National Reputation Bank) by paying 2,000 reşat gold coins.Rukiye stated that these shares should have been transferred to his heirs, including herself, upon his death in 1918. The value of these shares was estimated to be approximately 12 million Turkish lira at the time of the lawsuit.[13][14]
Personal Life
Rukiye never married and has no children but was involved in 8 year long relationship with artist Mehmet Güleryüz.She was described as "very artistic person" by her elder sister Banu Hodo during her funeral.[15]
Death
Rukiye Bala Hodo passed away at 3:00 AM[16] on 4 November 2023 at her residence in the Emin Vafi Korusu area of Ortaköy, Istanbul from brain tumor, according to her elder sister Naime Banu Hodo, Rukiye had been struggling with this illness for a long time,[17] following her passing, her funeral prayer was held at Zincirlikuyu Mosque after the noon prayer, and she was subsequently interred at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery in Istanbul. [18]
