Rumpenheim Ferry
The Rumpenheim Ferry is a cable-car ferry between Offenbach-Rumpenheim on the southern side of the Main and a feeder road to the B8 North Main. It is located at Mainkilometer 48.06. Downstream the next Main crossing for motor vehicles is the Carl-Ulrich Bridge and the Arthur-von-Weinberg-Steg for pedestrians and bicycles, upstream the Mühlheim barrage for pedestrians and cyclists and the Steinheimer Mainbrücke for non-portable vehicles. The next Main ferry downstream is the Höchst Main ferry.
History
The ferry connection in Rumpenheim has been documented since the beginning of the 17th century. Rumpenheim was a Hanau-Münzenberger, from 1736 a Hesse-Kassel exclave on the southern side of the Main. The only way to visit this part of the country without having to leave the county for the trip was by ferry.
In 1960 the construction of three additional Main bridges upstream of the existing Carl Ulrich Bridge was planned and in 1960 the city of Offenbach am Main therefore decided to close the ferry. However, the bridges were never built and the ferry still exists today.
The municipally operated ferry was privatized and sold to Hans Dill, the previous tenant. Today the ferry is operated by Hans Dill's children. It is completely unusual that the ferry service is possible without public subsidies.
Technology
The yaw cable ferry has two guide ropes that prevent the ferry from drifting off. Today's ship dates from 1946; it has been used in Rumpenheim since 1972, is significantly larger than its predecessor and was previously stationed on the Moselle. Two diesel engines with 26 and 42 hp cause the feed. Until 1972, the Rumpenheim Main ferry was operated as a trolley ferry.
Operating times and prices
The ferry runs daily at least from 8.00 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., on weekdays and in the summer months also beyond. Ferry fares start at 40 cents for a single trip by a pedestrian and range up to 1.60 euros for vans. Tickets from the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) are not recognized (as of June 2015), although the Rumpenheim Main ferry with line number OF-19 is included in its numbering scheme.
