Running from the Dreamland is a 2014 novel by Nepali author Tulasi Acharya. It was first published in 2014 by Allwrite Publishing, a small U.S. press. In 2023, it was published in Nepal by Bhundipuran Publication.
Originally written in English,[1] the book also has been translated into Nepali as Swapnabhumi.[2]
Premise
The novel provides a glimpse into the challenges and complexities faced by international students and also the Nepali community. It follows a young man who returns to Nepal after realizing the importance of his country and his own happiness. It "highlights the cultural differences experienced by Nepalis living abroad".[3][4][5][6][7][8]
Reception
The book received positive responses from reviewers.[9][10] Dr. Kay Traille writes, "Overall, Running from the Dreamland is a thought-provoking and moving story that sheds light on the experiences of Nepali immigrants, especially international students living in the United States".[3] Mahesh Paudyal writes, "The novel also exposes the internal contradictions of America—the way it grills, the way international students suffer, the way love and marriage are broken in a fit of anger, the way man and machines differ only sparingly, and the way even copper glitters like gold".[4] Book Life in Publishers Weekly writes, "Deepak's experiences are moving and ring true, echoing and enriching truths that have been explored in the body of South Asian immigrant writing. Acharya's prose tends toward the blunt and declaratory, fitting the drudge work that Deepak, who lacks legal work documents, must take on to achieve his dreams".[6] Anthony Grooms writes, "This novel sees America through the eyes of a visiting student from Kathmandu as he struggles to make a life in his new land. At times, the novel is funny, other times moving, as the protagonist comes to realize the American dream, not in the country's wealth, but in its people. Importantly, this story gives us insight into the immigrant experience and the difficulties and joys of adjusting to a new culture."[9]
