Rusi Bozhanov was a participant in the guerrilla movement during World War II and was a naval officer (captain first rank), journalist, writer and playwright.
Biography
He was born in 1925. He stayed in an orphanage in Sofia. In 1941 he entered the high school department of the Maritime School in Varna. He was an active member of the RMC there.
As a senior cadet he ran away from school and joined the partisan movement in the spring of 1944. He became the commander of the Stoyan Edrev Partisan Detachment, which united many Lovech and Pleven partisans. After the death of Volo Yonchev he was made commander of the Vasil Levski Partisan Detachment based out of Pleven, on June 19, 1944. He took part in the war against Germany as a volunteer company commander.
He graduated from the Naval School after the war. He served as a company commander. He graduated from the school for commanders of torpedo boats in Ochakov and the Naval Academy in St. Petersburg. He was the commander of a detachment, then a division, and was then made Chief of Staff of the Bulgarian Navy (1953 - 1958). After that he was a military Attaché in Washington DC, USA. He resigned in 1963.[1]
He worked as Deputy Director General of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (1963–1967), Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper "Fatherland Front" (1971–1975), Director of the publishing house "Bulgarian Artist" (1975–1976), editor-in-chief of the Literary Front newspaper (1983–1984). Member of the National Council of the Patriotic Front (1972–1977).
