Russell Craig (artist)
Russell James Craig is an Australian artist, printmaker and educator.
Craig was born in Victoria and his early life included living in both Wimmera (Kaniva) and Melbourne (Brighton). He commenced his art and tertiary education in the early 1970s, graduating with a Fine Art Painting major from the Caulfield Institute of Technology in 1973 and as a fellow of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1974. He undertook teacher training at the State College of Victoria, Hawthorn, graduating in 1976. This was also the time he began exhibiting his art, initially at the Clive Parry Gallery, Beaumaris, Victoria.
In 1978, he began working at the Queensland College of Art (QCA), Griffith University[1], Brisbane, where he taught printmaking and drawing in the Fine Art department for almost 40 years. In 1984, he received a Queensland Government SARAS postgraduate scholarship [2] that enabled him to study a master printer qualification at the highly regarded Tamarind Institute [3], University of New Mexico, USA. He was the first Australian to be awarded this prestigious printmaking qualification.
In 2003 he Completed a Masters in visual Art qualification at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.
Most of his long teaching career was involved with imparting the unique skills and appreciation of the art of lithography as practiced by the Tamarind Institute. All of the major art residencies and exhibitions curated by Craig were centred around his area of expertise and showcased the students he taught over 40 years. These were held at the Hanoi University of Fine Art, Vietnam[4] (1995/96); the Ecole d’Art of Noumea, New Caledonia (1997); the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China [5] (1999); Tokyo National University of Arts[6], Japan (2009); the Academy of Fine Art in Warsaw, Poland[7] (2013), as well as numerous galleries in Brisbane, regional Queensland, and Australia.
Craig participated in artist-in-residency programmes in a number of overseas institutions. Since 1975 he has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions. The themes of many of his most significant solo exhibitions were influenced by his experiences, knowledge and reflections gleaned from these residencies.
