Russell G. Jones in an American stage and film actor best known for his award winning performance in Pulitzer Prize winning play, Ruined and as Hiram in the critically acclaimed Netflix series, Godless. He is also founder of BLIND SPOT which facilitates salons designed for communities seeking to achieve greater critical thinking around inclusivity and antiracism.[1]

Career[edit]

Jones has had a consistent career on stage in New York and made his Broadway debut in Manhattan Theatre Club’s Saint Joan.[2]

Also in New York, he has appeared in Signature Theatre Company (New York City) In the Blood,[3], at The Public Theater and in Los Angeles at Mark Taper Forum in Father Comes Home From the Wars, Parts 1, 2 & 3 [4] and A View from 151st Street, at Playwrights Horizons in The Call, at Second Stage Theater Uptown Series, King Liz,[5], with Cherry Lane Theatre in The Surgeon and Her Daughters, with The New Group in Marie & Bruce and God, The Crackhouse and The Devil with Circle Repertory Company.

One of his most notable stage performances was originating the role of Christian in the Pulitzer Prize winning play, Ruined written by Lynn Nottage. He performed in Ruined at New York's Manhattan Theatre Club, in Los Angeles at the Geffen Playhouse[6], in Chicago at the [Goodman Theatre]], and in Seattle at the Intiman Theatre.

He has served on the Board of Directors of LAByrinth Theater Company and has been a member since 1995. [7] Productions with them include Our Lady of 121st Street, A View from 151st Street, and In Arabia We’d All Be Kings.

Regionally he has been seen at New York Stage and Film and Huntington Theatre Company in The Power of Duff[8] and Cleveland Play House as Simon in The Whipping Manand at The Franklin Street Station in This Is Reading. [9]

His work in television includes recurring roles on Netflix's Godless and FX's The Americans, guest starring on FX’s Louie, Cinemax’s The Knick, NBC’s The Blacklist, Amazon's pilot Sea Oak with Glenn Close[10], Law & Order, and Do No Harm, and CBS’s Elementary. Film credits include Detroit, Motherless Brooklyn (film), Queen of Glory, The Ticket, Pinch, A Most Violent Year, Side Effects, Mania Days, Traffic, Companions, and Turntable. [11]

Personal Life[edit]

Russell Gebert Jones is originally from Shaker Heights, Ohio and he attended Boston University’s School for the Arts. [12] He currently lives in New York City [13] with his wife Elz Cuya Jones, The North Star Fund’s Deputy Director of Resources and Strategy and their son.[14] He is a proud donor father to an older son who lives in Oakland, CA.

Teaching[edit]

As a teaching artist he has worked throughout the New York tri-state artist since 1992 creating workshops and programs for artsgenesis, the ABC+ program, Community Word Project, Periwinkle National Theatre, The Liberty Partnerships program at Bank Street Teachers College as well as Cleveland Public Theater. He has served on Labyrinth’s education team since its inception, helping to create its Master Class, Ensemble Workshop and serving as the Program Director of the 2014 Intensive Ensemble.[15]
