Ruth A. Kruse

Ruth A. Kruse is a Community Leader in Omaha, Nebraska. She founded Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Omaha Chapter in 1987. She has been awarded with one of Nebraska's highest honors of becoming a Nebraska Admiral in 2008 for being a "prominent citizen" in her contributions to the State of Nebraska. Ruth A. Kruse, along with her husband, Lowen Kruse, was "integral to the founding of United Methodist Ministries in 1966."[1] She was a diaconal minister with the United Methodist Conference of Nebraska, serving Grace Church in Lincoln for 4 years and United Ministries of Northeast Omaha for 15 years. She was the AARP (North Florence) President from 2003-09 as well as the Vice President from 2009-10, and currently serves as the Program Chair.[2] She served for fifteen years on the Foster Care Review Board from 2001-2016.[3] She was the President of the Kiwani's Club of North Omaha from 2005-06.[4]

Ruth Kruse was born in 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a B.A. in Music, and from Garret Theological Seminary with a M.A. in Christian Education. Ruth was married to Senator Lowen V. Kruse in 1956 until his death in 2017.[5] Ruth was instrumental in assisting Senator Kruse with changing Nebraska's impaired driving laws.

Ruth A. Kruse has received numerous community service awards for her work related to impaired driving laws, immigrant reform, social justice and community building, including:

  • Jefferson Award from KETV Omaha in 1986 for community service.[6]
  • Gary Schlosser Justice Award for Recognition of Outstanding Public Service in 1993.[7]
  • National Safety Council of Nebraska OPPD Service to Community Safety Award in 2005.[8]
  • Project Extra Mile "Making the Difference" Award for service in reducing and preventing alcohol-related harms, 2013.
  • Justice for Our Neighbors - Nebraska 2014 award to Lowen and Ruth Kruse "for their commitment and compassion in service to vulnerable immigrants."[9]
  • Distinguished Service Award to Lowen and Ruth Kruse from First United Methodist Church in Omaha in 2017.[10]
  • The Ruth and Lowen Kruse Outdoor Classroom was named in honor of the couple by The Big Garden in Omaha for their decades dedicated to social justice work in 2017.[11]
