Ruth Campau (born February 4th, 1955) is a visual artist from Denmark.
Ruth Campau lives and works in Copenhagen. She has studied Art History at Copenhagen Open University. She is a member of The Danish Artist Society and The Artist Association Grønningen. She has been a member of the Academy Council, the Royal Danish Academy of Art, and a board member at O-Overgaden Institute of Contemporary Art.
With a focus on how her artworks interact with their surroundings, Ruth Campau works in the field of expanded painting. Ruth Campau’s paintings are created with long, concentrated brushstrokes that freeze the artist’s movement into the paint. The works can be understood as a segment of a larger, infinite painting and they point back towards the painterly action and the body they are created with. Ruth Campau’s works often take shape of large installations, immersive environments, or site-specific projects.[1]
She has exhibited her works nationally and internationally at ARoS, Arken Museum of Modern Art, KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Bornholm Art Museum, KØS Museum of art in public spaces, Randers Museum of Art, Esbjerg Art Museum, Fuglsang Art Museum, HEART Herning Museum of Modern Art, PS Projectspace in Amsterdam, Deutscher Kunstlerbund in Berlin, and Schloss Biesdorf in Berlin, among others.
She has created several commissioned works for public spaces such as Hvidovre Hospital, Denmark, the municipality of Aarhus, Denmark, Randers Art Museum, Denmark, Borås Psychiatric Hospital, Sweden, University College Vejle, Denmark, The National Hospital of Denmark, The Department of Civil Affairs, Denmark, The Danish Patent and Trademark Office, a housing complex in Wansee, Berlin, and Aalborg University Campus Esbjerg.
She has collaborated with a series of recognized architects such as C. F. Møller Architects at the construction of the residential complex The Northern Light at Amerika Plads in Copenhagen. The Northern Light was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2006.
Ruth Campau has also acted as curator of several projects such as the exhibition project Paintbox in collaboration with visual artist Michael Mørk.
Ruth Campau is represented by Gallery DGV in Svendborg, Galerie Gebr. Lehmann in Dresden, Feldbusch Wiesner Rudolph Galerie in Berlin, and Galerie Hartwich in Rügen.[2]
