Ruth Mitchell-Quill (born 2 November 1935) is an Irish writer and professor of psychiatry.[1][not in citation given]
Biography
She was raised in Kerry Pike, Cork, Ireland, and is the youngest child of Maud Mitchell and Herbert Mitchell.[2][not in citation given][3][4]
In 1993, she published 'The Man with the Long Hair: The Spirit of Freedom in a Woman's Story' (Glenwood Publications), written by her mother, Maud, in 1971.[5][6] She is a former director of Glenwood Publications and former clinical director of North Lee Mental Health Services.[7][8]
Mitchell-Quill was involved in art-related therapy projects in the 1990s. She supported an initiative taken by Sheila Holland, a nurse therapist in Our Lady's Hospital, Cork, creating a multi-sensory environment in a vacant space between the male and female wards of St Kevin's unit.[4] In July 1999, Mitchell-Quill was interviewed by the Irish Times regarding an art exhibition opened at St Kevin's Psychiatric (multi-sensory) Unit in Shanakiel, Cork.[8]
Dr Ruth Mitchell, clinical director of North Lee Mental Health Services, said at the opening that the therapeutic value of painting had become well recognised. It helped to develop self-confidence and self-expression as well as improved communication skills.
