Rutherford School is a historic school located in the Bonnie Doon neighbourhood in Edmonton, Alberta. The school is named after Alberta's first premier Alexander Cameron Rutherford upon whose land the school was built.[1]
History
Originally called the Alexander C. Rutherford School, the name was quickly shortened to Rutherford School.
In June 1910, one city block of land was purchased by the Strathcona Public School Board (amalgamated with Edmonton Public School in 1912) from Alexander Rutherford for $600 an acre.[1] The following month, local builder William Deitz won the contract to build the four-roomed school brick school for $12,900.[2][3]
The school officially opened on January 3, 1911, with a student enrollment of approximately ninety students.[4]
In 1985, the ministry of Alberta Culture rejected an application to have the school designated as a Provincial Historic Site as it did not meet the specific criteria for designation.[5]
