Magician, acrobat

Ruxianguli Aibaidula (Chinese: 茹仙古丽·艾拜都拉; born 1970[lower-alpha 1]) is a Chinese magician of Uyghur ethnicity, born in Kashgar, Xinjiang.[1][3] She began her career as an acrobat with the Xinjiang Acrobatic Troupe and later turned to magic; her act Flying Cards won a Golden Lion Award at the 3rd National Acrobatics Competition in 1991.[4][5] From 1998 she starred in magic galas at Happy Valley Shenzhen, and she has since worked in Shenzhen as a performer and creator of magic.[6][3]

Life and career

Early life

In 1976 Ruxianguli entered the trainee class of the Xinjiang Acrobatic Troupe to study acrobatics, performing acts such as rola bola, juggling and head balancing; she graduated in 1979 and stayed with the troupe as a performer.[7] After about ten years as an acrobat, she became an assistant to a magician in the troupe and through this moved into magic. Practising with plastic playing cards that she made herself, she developed two techniques, card throwing (飞牌) and card flicking (甩牌), and combined them with ethnic musical instruments, costume and dance to create the magic act Flying Cards.[6][7]

Xinjiang Acrobatic Troupe

In May 1991, Flying Cards won a Golden Lion Award in the finals of the 3rd National Acrobatics Competition, organised by the Ministry of Culture; eleven acts received the award at that competition.[lower-alpha 2][8][4][5] A 1995 commentary in Xinjiang Yishu (新疆艺术) said that the act fused Xinjiang song and dance with traditional conjuring.[9] In 1994, China Culture Daily ran a profile of her in its "Rising Stars" column, calling her the "Flying-Card Fairy".[5]

In 1993 she was elected from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region as a deputy to the 8th National People's Congress.[lower-alpha 3][10][7][11] While in Beijing for sessions of the congress, she became a student of the magician Fu Qifeng [zh].[12][13]

Happy Valley Shenzhen

In 1998 she moved from the Xinjiang Acrobatic Troupe to Shenzhen, where she was engaged as chief magician by Happy Valley (Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town Happy Valley Tourism Company), a theme park then in preparation.[1][14] The first show in which she starred at Happy Valley was the song-and-dance magic drama Happy MD (欢乐MD).[15][14] After Happy MD, Happy Valley presented the magic gala Dreamland Divine Comedy (梦幻神曲), which she arranged and starred in and which combined magic, dance and acrobatics;[1][16] a review published in Zaji yu Moshu (杂技与魔术, "Acrobatics and Magic") in 2000 considered its structure and form of presentation different from those of an ordinary stage magic show.[17] She later starred in other galas, including Magic Rose (魔力玫瑰) and Light of Magic (魔幻之光), and the magic acts in the theatre were also designed by her.[1][14] On stage she wears ethnic costume rather than the tailcoat and top hat customary for magicians.[6][3]

In October 2006 she performed Card Skills (牌技) by invitation at the 21st Monte-Carlo Magic Stars in Monaco and received the event's "Coup de Cœur de M. Piaget" award.[18][19] In 2019 she was elected president of the Shenzhen Acrobats Association.[20]
