Ryan Berryman is an American college athletics administrator who serves as the athletic director at the University of New Mexico. He assumed the role in 2026 after previously serving as interim athletic director following the departure of Fernando Lovo to the University of Colorado Boulder.[1]
Prior to becoming athletic director, Berryman held several leadership positions within the New Mexico athletics department, including deputy athletic director and chief operating officer. He also previously served as senior associate athletic director and chief financial officer at the University of Washington.[2]
Early life and education
Berryman is a native of New Mexico and attended the University of New Mexico. He earned three degrees from the university: a bachelor’s degree in marketing and operations management, a Master of Business Administration, and a master’s degree in sports administration.[3]
While a student at UNM, he served as a student manager for the New Mexico Lobos men's basketball program, working under head coaches Steve Alford and Craig Neal.[3]
In 2015, Berryman was appointed student regent on the University of New Mexico Board of Regents by Governor Susana Martinez.[4]
Career
New Mexico
Berryman began his career in athletics administration with the University of New Mexico, initially joining the basketball program as a student manager in 2012. He later served as director of operations for the men’s basketball team before transitioning into athletic department administration.[3]
He held several administrative roles within the department, including associate athletic director and senior associate athletic director, overseeing business operations and financial planning.[3]
In 2025, Berryman returned to New Mexico as deputy athletic director and chief operating officer after a brief tenure at the University of Washington. In that role he oversaw budgeting, human resources, contracts, legal affairs, and internal operations of the athletics department.[2]
Following the departure of athletic director Fernando Lovo to Colorado in December 2025, University President Garnett Stokes named Berryman interim vice president and director of athletics effective January 1, 2026.[1]
Later on March 4th 2026, he was appointed the permanent athletic director of the New Mexico Lobos athletic department.[5]
Washington
In 2024, Berryman joined the athletic department at the University of Washington as senior associate athletic director and chief financial officer. In that role he oversaw financial planning and business operations for the Huskies athletics program during its transition to the Big Ten Conference.[3]
Personal life
Berryman grew up in New Mexico and has longstanding ties to the University of New Mexico community, having attended the university and worked in its athletics department for much of his career.[1]
