Intro[edit]

Ryan Howsam is a British businessman, entrepreneur, investor and mentor, whose operations are largely based within the insurance industry.

Howsam started his career selling double-glazing at 17 and gone on to build a hugely successful without external investment.

During the 2020 Covid pandemic Howsam has offered to help other entrepreneurs with mentoring, and is currently seeking startups and businesses requiring investment.[1]

Howsam is passionate about golf, both as a player with a handicap of 5 and as a businessman.[2]

Background[edit]

Howsam developed an interest in golf at the age of 13 and considered the possibility of pursuing a job as an assistant professional before moving into the business world.[2]

In 1999, he fused his passion for golf and business interests, founding First for Golf, a venture that offered two-for-one golfing trip packages to Europe, accompanied by insurance coverage. He set up an offshore technology team based in Sri Lanka. First for Golf ceased trading in 2002 and the Sri Lanka team became Intervest, Howsam’s first online investment.[3]

Business Career[edit]

Howsam is Chairman of Staysure, an insurance company founded in 2005 and tailored to the growing demographic of over-50s with pre-existing medical conditions.[4] Staysure has been listed in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100, a ranking of Britain's top 100 private companies by fastest-growing sales, on four separate occasions.[3][5]

An angel investor in startups and other businesses through his Gibraltar-based venture capital company, Howsam Limited, Howsam’s portfolio includes Staysure, Avanti[4] and payingtoomuch.com[6]

He also owns a stake in Garçon Wines[7], an eco-friendly flat pack wine packaging company.[8]

In 2019, Howsam established Arimelia SL, a real estate investment trust in Spain which purchases luxury rental properties.[9]

Staysure Seniors PGA Championship[edit]

Howsam has been the driving force behind Staysure's sponsorship of the European Senior Tour the worldwide professional golf tour for men aged 50 and over. Part of the PGA European Tour, the event was renamed The Staysure Tour when the company became its first ever title sponsor in 2018.[10][11]

In 2019, The Staysure Tour was made up of 20 events played around the world, including the PGA Seniors Championship hosted at the London Club as the season closed.

In 2020, it was renamed the Legends Tour. Howsam took a majority equity share and is the first individual to have a controlling stake and leadership role in a major professional golf tour.[2]

Charitable Initiatives[edit]

In 2016, Howsam completed the Virgin Strive Challenge with colleagues from Staysure.[12]

Howsam has also helped raise funds for the Cudeca Foundation, a cancer care hospice.[13]

In April 2020 he created The Entrepreneur Fund, with Simon Jordan and David Tabizel, with the intention of offering free advice to businesses struggling during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.[14]
