Early Life[edit]
Ryan Hurley was born and raised in Vancouver, WA. Growing up, he wanted to be a fireman and spent countless hours riding his BMX bicycle. As he grew up, he maintained an interest in riding, but the bicycle was replaced by motorcycles. In college, he particularly enjoyed studying history. Hurley’s first job was haying fields. He would reach out to farmers and offer to stack the hay for their fields. Sometimes he would bring his friends along as additional labor, contracting the haying project as a company owner, before he ever officially owned a company.
Career[edit]
Ryan Hurley started working in the real estate industry when he took a job at Hinton Development. While at Hinton Development, Hurley worked in multiple capacities. However, he was primarily responsible for managing the company’s residential development portfolio. He scoped out prospective development opportunities, developed strategies for projects, and performed feasibility studies, along with overseeing sales. Managing a diverse portfolio at Hinton exposed him to the various aspects of residential development, including acquisition, disposition, construction, and entitlement.
The 2008 financial crisis was a difficult time for everyone, and Hinton Development was no exception. The company was forced to start laying off employees one by one. Soon Hurley was the only person working at Hinton Development other than the owner of the company. Left with no option Hurley had to leave the company.
Fortunately, he was able to capitalize on the period of uncertainty and the tough decision to start his real estate development firm. Given that businesses were struggling at the time, Hurley was advised against starting his own company. However, Hurley decided to give it a go anyways. And, in 2009, Hurley Development opened its doors for business.
Hurley Development has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Today they offer a wide variety of services, including master planning, entitlement and construction of buildable lots, ground-up construction, value-added repositioning, comprehensive repurposing, and structural refreshes. Since 2009, Hurley has successfully led his company through the completion of dozens of projects. Hurley Development’s diverse approach to real estate development means that it is not limited to only residential buildings, but they have also developed restaurants, office buildings, commercial plazas, and mixed-use communities.
The company is presently working on six projects which include apartment buildings, retail centers, office spaces, and mixed-use communities. The Navalia and Adera apartments are being constructed in downtown Vancouver. The retail center is called Skyview Station and is located in Salmon Creek. The mixed-use spaces include the 107 acre HQ Vancouver project.
All of Hurley Development’s projects emphasize community, sustainability, and smart living. His projects HQ Vancouver and Adera apartments are incorporating a smart buildings program, which means modern technologies will be widely adopted to provide a better standard of living, while saving money on energy expenses. His smart city approach to development also ties in with his efforts to make sustainability a priority in his projects. The technologies that are being utilized in his projects are sustainable, energy-efficient, long-lasting, and resource-efficient. His projects are also LEED-certified, which is the gold standard for energy efficiency. The green spaces in his projects use native species of plants that are drought resistant. And the irrigation system is complete with moisture and rain sensors, to avoid water wastage.
Hurley has been able to do well in his business because he has focused on building authentic relationships with small businesses. Frequently collaborating with different members of the company and the community has engendered soft skills that have helped him advance his career.
Philanthropy[edit]
Ryan Hurley actively participates in philanthropic efforts in and around Vancouver. As an active member of the community, he is always looking for ways to contribute to the betterment of his town. Hurley maintains close ties with the various non-profits in Vancouver to help them find solutions to societal issues and challenges. He has also cultivated a sense of giving in his employees, as he actively encourages them to volunteer at various non-profits, even during office hours. His employees have frequently worked with the local Clark County non-profits.
During the pandemic, Hurley’s company helped a local food bank acquire a mobile food pantry. Setting up a mobile food pantry is a capital-intensive endeavor and Hurley’s company donated $60,000 to the food bank. He also connected with other business owners and organizations to help the food bank raise the necessary funds to get the project over the finish line. Hurley managed to collect donations from LSW architects, his close business partners who donated $6,000. Being an active part of a local church, he met with the leadership at Crossroads Community Church and they decided to join in with a donation of $15,000. Riff Creative and Specialty Graphic Solutions came on board to design the truck graphics and wrap the truck for free.
