Ryan Krzak (born June 5, 1988),[1] known online as RWappin, is an American animator and illustrator. He is known for his animated skits and music videos. He gained online attention posting animations on Newgrounds and YouTube, particularly noted for his fan-made animated music videos based on songs by the musician "Weird Al" Yankovic.[2] This fan work eventually led to a professional commission from Yankovic for an official music video.
Career
Early work and fan animations
Krzak began teaching himself Adobe Flash (now Adobe Animate) in February 2006 and started posting his work on the animation portal Newgrounds.[2] His early independent projects included animated music videos for "Weird Al" Yankovic songs. He created animations for "Everything You Know Is Wrong" and undertook a more complex, nine-month project for the song "Albuquerque", which he completed in November 2006.[2] These animations utilized an original character Krzak designed to represent the song's protagonist. Krzak attended Columbia College Chicago and graduated in 2010.[3]
Freelance animation and illustration
Krzak works as a freelance animator and illustrator, operating under the name RWappin.[2] His professional website showcases various animation and illustration projects.[4]
He has contributed animation to several notable projects across various mediums. In video games, he performed clean-up animation for the opening sequence of the 2017 video game Sonic Mania, where he assisted lead animator Tyson Hesse. He also worked on cutscenes for Super Meat Boy Forever (2020) and Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine (2023), as well as contributing the cleanup animation to River City Girls (2019), animation to Full Throttle: Remastered (2017) and animation to Indivisible (2019) as part of Studio Yotta.[5]
In television, Krzak has served as an animator and animation assistant for 14 episodes of the Adult Swim series Smiling Friends (2020–2024). He also worked as an in-between animator, lead animator, and animator for the web series Pencilmation (2018–2021). His other TV credits include Infrequently Asked Questions (2019), *DBX* (2018), and *Bushworld Adventures* (2018), for which he was an animation coordinator.[6][unreliable source?][5]
In 2017, Krzak provided illustrations for the children's book The Mouse in the Lemon Tree, written by Jack Dennis.[7] He also has a personal animation project titled "End Times", which he aims to develop into a show and is currently releasing as comics and books.[3][2]
"Polkamania!" music video
In 2024, Krzak was commissioned by "Weird Al" Yankovic to animate a segment for the official music video accompanying the polka medley "Polkamania!". According to the podcast interview, Yankovic hired Krzak based on his appreciation for the fan animations Krzak had created years earlier.[2] Krzak animated the portion of the medley featuring Yankovic's cover of Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk".[8] The segment prominently features the same character Krzak had originally designed for his fan animations of "Albuquerque" and "Everything You Know Is Wrong".[9] Krzak is also listed as a director for this segment on IMDb.[unreliable source?]
