Ryan McLaren
Ryan McLaren is an American political aide, adaptive athlete, and Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor of Vermont in the 2026 Vermont lieutenant gubernatorial election. He previously worked for U.S. Senator Peter Welch and in Vermont state government.[1]
Early life and education
McLaren attended Wesleyan University, graduating in 2008.[2]
Career
McLaren worked in the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles as assistant to the commissioner.[3] He later worked in the office of U.S. Representative Peter Welch, including as an outreach staffer.[4]
In 2017, McLaren ran for the Central District seat on the Burlington School Board. The BHS Register reported that he had previously served on the Essex School Board and coached the Burlington High School boys lacrosse team.[4]
Spinal cord injury and adaptive athletics
In March 2017, McLaren sustained a spinal cord injury while skiing at Mad River Glen in Fayston, Vermont.[1] In 2025, the High Fives Foundation named McLaren its M. Scott Roberds Athlete of the Year. Vermont Business Magazine reported that he had completed the Boston Marathon five times as a hand cyclist.[5]
2026 lieutenant gubernatorial campaign
McLaren announced his campaign for lieutenant governor of Vermont in January 2026. VTDigger reported that he entered the Democratic primary against former lieutenant governor Molly Gray, with incumbent Republican lieutenant governor John Rodgers expected to run for reelection.[1]
Personal life
McLaren lives in Essex Junction, Vermont.[1]
