Ryan Stanier is a British art entrepreneur and the founder of The Other Art Fair, an international art fair for emerging artists. Founded in 2011 in London, the fair has expanded globally to cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Sydney, and Melbourne. Stanier sold the fair to Saatchi Art in 2016 and continues to work on initiatives promoting new talent and sustainability in the arts.

Early life

Stanier grew up in Surrey and lives in London. He studied Business and Law at Kingston University.

Career

The Other Art Fair

In 2011, Stanier founded The Other Art Fair to provide independent artists with opportunities to sell their work directly to buyers, outside of traditional gallery systems.[1] Since its inception, the fair has held events internationally, including in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Sydney, and Melbourne.[2]

By 2024, The Other Art Fair had hosted over 100 editions and facilitated the sale of more than 100,000 artworks from emerging artists across 20 countries.[3]

The Guardian described the fair as "The Future of Art".[4]

In 2016, The Other Art Fair was acquired by Saatchi Art.[5]

Initiatives

In 2018, Stanier collaborated with Soho House curator Kate Bryan to launch NOT 30%, a fair dedicated to promoting women artists. The name references a 2018 Financial Times statistic indicating that women comprised around 30% of artists represented by commercial galleries.[6]

In 2019, The Other Art Fair introduced Greener Future, a year-long initiative focused on raising awareness about climate change within the arts.[7]

In 2021, the fair launched New Futures, a prize program supporting early-career artists through mentorship and free exhibition space. Each edition selects three local winners.[8]

Public engagement

Stanier has given talks at Kingston Business School, the University of Arizona, and Christie's Art Business Course. He has also participated in events organized by Soho House (London and New York) and The Whitechapel Gallery.

Art advisory work

Beyond his role with The Other Art Fair, Stanier provides art advisory services to private and corporate clients.

Recognition

A 2018 report noted that over 68% of attendees at the London edition of The Other Art Fair were first-time or occasional art buyers.[9]

Artists who have supported the fair include:

  • Rankin[10]
  • Tracey Emin[11]
  • Martin Parr
  • Ronnie Wood[12]
  • Gary Baseman
  • Laurie Vincent
  • The Connor Brothers
