São Romão or São Romão do Sado is a Portuguese village in the parish of Torrão, municipality of Alcácer do Sal, in the Setúbal District. It was the seat of a parish, also named São Romão do Sádão, which was merged with the parish of Torrão at the end of 1936.

The village is located on the bank of the Sado River, shortly after its confluence with the Rio Xarrama.

It is served by National Road 262, connecting to the north to National 5, and to the south, Municipal Road 543 leads to Grândola, also providing access to the village of Rio de Moinhos in Torrão.

The parish of São Romão do Sádão was extinguished by Decree-Law No. 27,424, of December 31, 1936,[1] becoming one of the extinct parishes of Alcácer do Sal, like Montevil or Palma.

In the 1970 Census, 57 inhabitants were identified in the "Village of São Romão" in the data related to the parish of Torrão.[2]

History[edit]

In 1801, the then parish of São Romão (do Sádão) was part of the Municipality of Alcácer do Sal, which belonged to the Comarca of Setúbal, in the Province of Estremadura. At that time, the parish of Torrão, along with the parishes of Odivelas and Santa Margarida do Sado, composed the Municipality of Torrão.

In 1849, the parish of São Romão (do Sádão), along with the Municipality of Alcácer do Sal, were already in the District of Lisbon, still in the Province of Estremadura.

In April 1871, the parish of Torrão became part of the Municipality of Alcácer do Sal, where São Romão do Sádão was already located.

Although in the Censuses between 1911, 1920, and 1930 the parish of São Romão do Sádão appears annexed to the parish of Torrão, its official extinction only occurred in December 1936, after the Municipality of Alcácer do Sal had joined the newly created Setúbal District.[4]

Interestingly, in the 1940 Census, "São Romão do Sado" reappeared as an autonomous parish, with 2092 inhabitants, spread over various locations such as Algalé, Vale de Gaio Dam, Benagazil, Casa Branca, Crujeira Nova, Herdade dos Frades, Parchanas, Pontes, Portancho, Portinho, Porto de Rei, Quinta de Cima, Quinta de D. Rodrigo, Rio de Moinhos, Salema, Salema de Baixo, Sanchares, São Bento, São Domingos, São Romão do Sado, Vale de Lachique, Vale de Romeiras, Várzea Redonda, and Xamarrinha, among other isolated and scattered areas.
