S.J.Edward Raj @ Thalapathy who is popularly known as Director Thalapathy in Tamil Film and Television Industry is a Film Graduate, Actor, Director and Producer. His original full name is S.Joseph Edward Raj. While doing his graduation he has shortened his name to S.J.Edward Raj. When he entered into the Film Industry, Popular Film Director Manivannan wanted to give him a Tamil name and Director Manivannan gave him the name Thalapathy in his Film Pudhu Manidhan Starring Sathyraj, Banupriya, Goundamani and Manoramma.

Early Life
Thalapathy was born in a Farmer Family in a small village Megalathur, Tanjore District in Tamil Nadu, India. He was the eighth child in his family. He studied up to 7th Standard in Little Flower Middle School in his village Megalathur where he was the Secretary in the Student's Assembly. He studied his 8th Standard in St.Joseph’s(College) School, Cuddalore where he was the Class Leader. For 9th, 10th and S.S.L.C. he studied in Little Flower High School, Kumbakonam, where he was School People Leader.
Career
Film Artists Nazar, Arunpandiyan, Subhashini, Oorvasi, Archana, Ramki, Raghuvaran, Thalaivasal Vijay, Kalairani were his classmates. Film Directors Abavanan, Aravindharaj, R.V.Udhaya Kumar, R.K.Selvamani, Rajiv Menon, Thangar Bachan were his classmates. After Film Graduation he joined with Director Manivannan and worked in Films like Sandanakatru starring Vijayakanth and Gowdgami, Vazhkai Sakkaram starring Sathyaraj, Gowdhami and Goundamani, Pudhu Manidhan starring Sathyaraj, Banupriya, Goundamani and Manoramma. He also acted in Films like Sandana Katru, Sathyavakku, Vazhkai Sakkaram, Pudhu Manidan, Thodari, Sketch. He introduced Director Prabhu Soloman and Artist Anbhu Bala and Deepu into his films.
