SAAB 201, or flygplan 201 (Airplane 201) (Shortened fpl 201), was an experimental airplane used to test the shape of the SAAB 29:s Swept wing. The plane was built on the SAAB 91 Safir and equipped with a scaled down version of the SAAB 29:s swept wings. It was used during a shorter period for different tests.
History
Before the SAAB 29 was produced, it was unknown how a swept wing aircraft would perform. Therefore a small, single engine prop plane with wings from a SAAB 29 was suggested and built, with the SAAB Safir as it's base.[1] The plane was eventually designated as Flygplan 201 (Airplane 201) (fpl 201)[2]
One of the tests done with the fpl 201 was finding out how the settings of the flaps should work. All settings were done on the ground as the plane lacked controls to change flap position once in the air.
The tests were done during a few months between 1947-1948.[3] In September 1948 the SAAB 29 flew for the first time. After the test period the SAAB 201 was modified to do similar tests with wings for the SAAB 32 Lansen and redesignated as flygplan 202.[4]
