SABEST Robotics Competition is organized by SABEST , which stands for San Antonio Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology. It is an all volunteer, non-profit organization comprised of industry, government, and academic partners who donate time and resources to boost the interests of students who may become our future technology workforce. The robotics competition is held to awaken the minds of young technologists towards a future in engineering, science, and technology.
History[edit]
Started in 1994 becoming the second hub, SABEST formed as a non-profit organization to support a BEST event in San Antonio after the first event in 1993 in North Texas. The BEST organization (Best Robotics, Inc.) consists of hubs in several states. It is an all volunteer organization of teachers, mentors, volunteers, corporate sponsors, and students that support over 40 teams each year for the SABEST robotics competition. The diverse technical environment of San Antonio affords SABEST to receive direct efforts and sponsorships from the Air Intelligence Agency, Northrop Grumman, St. Mary’s University, Microsoft, Southwest Research Institute, AFCEA, and other companies.[1] The community support for these young technologists towards a future in STEM has been going strong for more than 20 years.
Competition[edit]
The competition is a six-week technical journey starting in September with the kick-off and culminating in a finals competition in October in San Antonio between more than 500 area middle and high school competitors. Each year starts with a raw kit (defined by BEST[2] competition requirements), guidelines, and competition and construction rules. These students engineer what they hope to be the successful robot and winning team of spirted and enthusiastic competitors to take home the award of San Antonio's "best" BEST team. This event provides an opportunity for all types of students to get involved. There are five scoring categories: Project Engineering Notebook, Marketing Presentation, Team Exhibit & Interview, Spirit & Sportsmanship, and Robot Performance. SABEST winning teams advance to the North Texas BEST and UIL State Championships in November or December.[3] The winning teams also are awarded a $60K and $50k St. Mary's University (San Antonio) scholarship to a graduating senior of the 1st and 2nd place teams, respectively.[4][5] The BEST competition allows student to showcase their skills and talents to colleges and future employers through the STEM Premier platform.
