Saevus is a Latin word meaning ‘fierce’ or ‘flamboyant’ and is a Wildlife and Natural history magazine and web portal[1]. Saevus has provided a platform to the youth of today to get informed and involved in pertinent environmental issues. An international magazine, it emphasizes on interaction with children and youth through various activities and events related to nature and its conservation.

History[edit]

Saevus was founded in 2012[2][3][4] to offer an expertise across the diverse subjects of wildlife, natural history, conservation and photography. The founding partners include famous wildlife photographers and conservationist Sandeep Mall, Santanu Nandy and Dhritiman Mukherjee. Presently the magazine is available as a quaterly issue.

Events and Initiatives[edit]

Saevus organizes various activities and events for creating environmental awareness among children and youth. People across the country participate in these contests, activities and events that are held by the publication, which emphasizes on educating the masses about environment and conservation.

Saevus Eco Achievers Olympiad (Formerly Natural Capital olympiad[5][6][7]) is one of the most dynamic initiatives undertaken by Saevus and YES Bank and is supported by the Central Board of Secondary Education. The finale of the first edition concluded recently on April 11th, 2015. The NCO aims to inculcate the assimilation, learning and appreciation of nature among children. It covers various topics related to the plant and animal kingdoms along with covering subjects such as climate change, global warming, etc. The first edition of the NCO received a tremendous response with around 10,000 students from over 250 schools from across the nation participating in the Olympiad. The meritorious students were honoured with cash prizes, trophies and certificates.

Saevus Eco Achievers Quiz[8][9][10] - Saevus magazine, in association with Rotary Clubs across the country organize SAEVUS ECO ACHIEVERS QUIZ, along-with Skybags and Hemchand Mahindra Foundation. Teams of three comprising students from standards 5th, 6th and 7th standards take part in the quiz championing the cause of the natural world!

The Hem Chand Mahindra Wildlife Foundation-Saevus Wildlife Warrior Awards[11] were launched in the year 2013 and aimed to recognize and honour individuals associated with wildlife protection and conservation in India, especially those on the frontlines who strive against unimaginable odds to do their job and maintain and preserve sanctuaries. The Wildlife Warrior Awards gave more emphasis to the neglected and oft-ignored sanctuaries. The Hem Chand Mahindra Wildlife Foundation & Saevus Wildlife Warriors Awards 2015 honored and saluted the lesser-known heroes such as Daily Wagers, Forest Guards, Foresters, Dy.Rangers and Rangers. HCMWF is a non-profit entity set up by Mr.Ashok Mahindra that aims to preserve and protect the fragile ecosystem and subsequently promote conservation of wildlife in India.

Youth4Clicks[12] is an another unique, yearly initiative undertaken by Saevus and HCMWF that gives India’s young and talented photographers a platform to improve their photography skills and be mentored by some of the biggest professionals in the country.

Natural Capital Awards[13], an inspiring programme organized by YES Bank and Saevus magazine, hosted in the year 2014 to honour those photographers who captured alluring vistas of nature and wildlife.

In the past, Saevus and Ricoh India Pvt. Ltd. conducted unique contests such as ‘WE ARE FAMILY’ in which participants had to send stunning shots of wildlife clicked by themselves – from animals and insects to birds with their families, etc. ‘Up Close and Personal’ pertained to close-up images of Indian flora and fauna taken by participants, while ‘The Winter Migrants’ contest saw participants send across remarkable pictures of migrant birds. Saevus also held various creative contests like Monsoon blooms, The Wings, Himalayan Hill Bird Winners, and Spot, Shoot and Win. Saevus and Green Wars gave a bigger picture to the ‘Wild and Endangered Contest’. It raised a debate between development and environment. Contestants were required to send images of endangered, Indian wild species. Earn Your Stripes was another successful creative contest organized by Saevus for school students on the eve of ‘Global Tiger Day’.

Green Game Changers is one of the recent initiatives taken by Saevus and Hem Chand Mahindra Wildlife Foundation, which gives a platform to nature-lovers and wildlife enthusiasts to showcase their inspirational stories, videos and photos of protecting and conserving the environment.
