SCDL (Safety Concept Description Language) is a notation for discussing the safety design of a system with architectural viewpoints. In particular, it can be used to effectively discuss, create, explain, review and share of Functional Safety Concepts,[1] Technical Safety Concepts,[1] Hardware and Software Safety Architectures, which are required by the Road Vehicles Functional Safety International Standard of ISO 26262.[2][3][4]

Overview

SCDL targets architecture of safety design, and discusses hierarchically the identification of safety mechanisms and safety related elements. The architecture designed by SCDL can be used to clearly distinguish between requirements and elements (sub-systems, software, hardware) in which requirements are located, dependencies between requirements, groupings of requirements, constraints between groups, requirement and weighting allocation can be described. History

In 2014, Shuhei Yamashita was the proposer. SCN-SG (Safety Concept Notation - Study Group) was launched with volunteer members who are highly aware of issues regarding safety design, and development activities of SCDL have started.[2]

In April 2016, the activity results of SCN-SG have been completed. The first version of the SCDL specification, version 1.0 of the Japanese version, has been issued. In November of the same year, the SCDL specification has been revised to Version 1.1 of the Japanese version. At the same time, the SCDL Specification Version 1.1 of the English version was issued as the first English version.[2]

In February 2017, the SCN-SG is continuing the standardization activities of SCDL specifications in Japan.[2]

In August 2018, the latest version of the SCDL specification is version 1.4 of the Japanese version (issued in August of the same year), and Version 1.3 of the English version (issued in August of the same year).[2]

In August 2019, the latest English version 1.4 of the SCDL specification was issued.[2]

Notation

SCDL is not a unique set of special symbols. It is an expanded version of the familiar graphical representation, helping to understand the specification intuitively. It is a notation that engineers can use for conversations and discussions focusing on safety design.[6]

In SCDL basic notation, there are Requirement, Requirement group, and Element as basic symbols. Combination methods for defining the relationship between basic symbols include Interaction, System boundary interaction, Pairing between redundant requirement groups, and Derivation of constraints for requirements pairing. In addition, it supports the representation of a requirement weighting (ASIL[1] in ISO 26262).[6]

The SCDL uses these basic notations to graphically represent safety design.[6]
