The SEQALU: Formosa 1867 (斯卡羅) was a Taiwanese historical drama based on the fatal Rover Incident in 1867 when the U.S. sent a military expedition to investigate a shipwreck in Taiwan.[1]
The show can be seen on Taiwan+ among others.[2]
Synopsis[edit]
The story is based on the historical novel The Puppet Flower (傀儡花) by Dr Chen Yaochang (陳耀昌), which recounts the 1867 Rover incident and the South Point Agreement (南岬之盟).[2] The story is set in March of the same year, in the southern tip of Taiwan, an American merchant ship, the Rover, encountered a shipwreck in a storm in the Hengchun Peninsula in the area of Hengchun (now Hengchun Township) and ran aground on the sea. Thirteen people on board went ashore to search for survival and were killed because they mistakenly entered the territory of the indigenous people, the Skaro Chieftaincy (the 18th Maoxiao community), and were mistakenly recognized as invaders by the local aborigines, resulting in the "Rover Incident". At that time, the Scalos and Paiwan would attack the foreigners who trespassed into their territory, claiming that the ancestors of the Turtle Lusha had been invaded by the foreigners a hundred years ago and were almost exterminated.
