SIJ Group (full name SIJ – Slovenska industrija jekla, d.d.) is a Slovenian steel group headquartered in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The group is focused on the production of stainless steel, special steels and related steel products. Its two main steelmaking companies are SIJ Acroni, based in Jesenice, and SIJ Metal Ravne, based in Ravne na Koroškem. SIJ Group employs more than 3,500 people and is one of the largest employers in Slovenia and a major employer in these two local communities.[1]
SIJ Group operates a vertically integrated circular economy business model that includes steel scrap processing, steel production, further processing, distribution and the production of selected finished steel products. Its steel production is based on recycled steel scrap and electric arc furnace technology. SIJ Acroni produces flat-rolled steel products, while SIJ Metal Ravne produces rolled and forged steel products.[2]
There are 30 companies in SIJ Group, including SIJ Acroni, SIJ Metal Ravne, SIJ Ravne Systems, SIJ SUZ, SIJ ZIP Center, SIJ Americas, Griffon & Romano and Niro Wenden. SIJ Group has revenues of €1 billion, with an annual production of around 450,000 tons, and is one of Slovenia's leading exporters.[1][3]
History
Steelmaking in the territory of present-day Slovenia has a long industrial tradition, with Jesenice and Ravne na Koroškem among the historic centers of ironworking and steel production. SIJ Group arose from a tradition of ironworks and ironworking plants in Slovenia from the 14th to the 20th centuries[4][5], followed by the later consolidation and restructuring of the industry. In 1969, the combined company Slovenske železarne was established, bringing together three major steel centers: Jesenice, Ravne na Koroškem and Štore. This represented a significant step towards rationalizing production and strengthening industrial development.[6]
The current group structure is tied to the transformation of the former Slovenian steel industry following the breakup of Yugoslavia and Slovenian independence.
After Slovenia gained independence in 1991, the Slovenian steel industry faced a crisis and underwent restructuring. Before the breakup of Yugoslavia, Slovenian steelmaking was more than 90% dependent on the Yugoslav market. Most of its production was geared towards commercial, low-quality steels, with very high costs, making them completely uncompetitive in European markets. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia and entry into foreign markets, the Slovenian steelworks were not competitive in these new territories. Restructuring followed. Acroni and Metal Ravne were established in 1992, while Slovenske železarne was renamed SIJ – Slovenian Steel Group in 2005.[7]
The privatization process was completed in 2007, and the current ownership structure has Dilon d.o.o. holding 72.223% of the company, the Republic of Slovenia holding 25.001%, treasury shares holding 2.775%, and other shareholders holding 0.001%.[8]
Between 2007 and 2017 there was a period of intensive investment in modernizing production and increasing production capacities according to sustainability principles. Investments were made in the best available technologies. The focus shifted towards product programs with higher added value for niche steel markets and strengthening the company’s market position, including the introduction of steel brands, development and innovation projects, reinforcement of sustainable operating principles, and vertical integration.
In 2008 SIJ group engaged in vertical integration through the acquisition of the steel scrap collection and recycling company Odpad Pivka, with an extensive network of subsidiaries in the Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia), enabling a greater degree of independence from global steel scrap market conditions.[7]
Vertical integration continued in 2009 with the acquisition of sales and service centers in Slovenia, Italy and Germany. Companies in Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America also joined the group in 2015.[9]
In 2016, the merger of the existing companies Noži Ravne and Serpa, along with the acquired company Sistemska tehnika, resulted in the establishment of SIJ Ravne Systems, the third largest company within the SIJ Group.[10]
In 2018, SIJ Acroni took over the operations and equipment for slag processing from Harsco Minerali.[11] Slag, which was once considered waste, is now a by-product that SIJ Group processes and mostly uses in its own production process, with some marketed for construction, road building and environmental remediation, thereby contributing to circular economy practices.
A center to provide support for the tooling industry in the region was established in 2020 through the transformation of SIJ Ravne Steel Center into the company RSC Holding, 51% owned by SIJ d.d., within which several companies operate to support the tooling sector.[12]
In recent years, the new company SIJ Middle East was established to expand sales activities in the Middle East.[13]
SIJ Group acquired the ResponsibleSteel certification in 2024, positioning the company among the world’s most responsible and sustainable steel producers.[2]
Production and products
SIJ Group operates in specialized segments of the steel industry, notably in stainless steels, special steels, tool steels and other high-value steel products, and is now described in sources as one of Europe's leading producers of stainless and special steels, supplying industries such as the automotive, oil, nuclear, aerospace and even space exploration sectors.[1]
According to external industry and local sources, SIJ group supplied stainless steel for the ITER project, largest fusion reactor at ITER in France.[14][15][16][17]
In the field of e-mobility, cold-rolled, high-silicon electrical steel sheets are a key component of next-generation electric vehicle motors. Their properties enable high electromagnetic efficiency, while also meeting strict requirements for sustainable production.[18]
SIJ Group is committed to the continual development of new steel grades. The company enhances its extensive in-house expertise and experience through collaboration with national research and educational institutions, and develops steel products that are lighter and thinner, have a longer service life and consequently a lower carbon footprint. These steels are in high demand from different industrial sectors, especially those involved in the production of green energy. SIJ Group regularly receives national awards for innovation from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia.[19][20]
SIJ Acroni’s production process includes scrap processing, steelmaking, continuous casting, hot rolling, cold rolling and quarto plate processing. Its products are used in industrial sectors such as mechanical engineering, energy, automotive, construction, chemical processing, oil and gas, transport, tooling and space.
SIJ Metal Ravne’s production process includes steelmaking, ingot casting, forging, rolling, remelting, heat treatment and machining. Its products are used in sectors such as mechanical engineering, automotive, aerospace, energy, oil and gas, tooling, transport and heavy industry.[2][21]
Sustainability and circular economy
SIJ Group is committed to global and European climate goals and operates according to the principles of the circular economy as a central part of its production model.[21]
Its two largest companies are modern recycling steelworks, which use steel scrap to produce steel using electric arc furnace technology. SIJ Group’s circular-economy approach is based on using around 78% scrap as the raw material input.
In 2024, SIJ Group obtained the ResponsibleSteel Core Site Certification for its SIJ Acroni and SIJ Metal Ravne sites, recognizing the company as one of the world's most responsible and sustainable steel producers.[22][23] ResponsibleSteel is an international non-profit organization that operates a standards and certification program for the steel sector. ResponsibleSteel-related commitments include safety, workers’ rights, human rights, stakeholder engagement, working with local communities, tackling climate change and emissions, and working to improve water management and biodiversity.[24][23]
SIJ Group has published sustainability and decarbonization targets in a Sustainable Development Strategy, with plans up to 2030. The group plans to reduce carbon emissions by 51% by 2030 compared with the benchmark year of 2020.[25]
In 2025, SIJ Group launched the Green2 brand, referring to steels produced from recycled scrap in electric arc furnaces using renewable electricity and single-site production.[26]
Industry context
SIJ Group operates in market segments that overlap with producers of stainless steel, special steel, tool steel, wear-resistant, high-strength structural, electrical and high-performance steel products. The group operates in specialized segments of the steel market rather than a mass commodity steel producer. Within the group, SIJ Acroni produces flat-rolled steel products, while SIJ Metal Ravne produces forged and rolled steel products, including tool and special steels.[27]
