The SIPTU Health Services Staffs' Credit Union (HSSCU) is a credit union in Ireland.[1] Established in 1970, it was originally founded to serve healthcare workers specifically.[2] However, numerous other credit unions later merged into it.
It has been described as one of Ireland's largest credit unions by the Evening Echo and the Irish Times.[3][4]
History[edit]
Established in 1970, the HSSCU was initially established to provide financial services to healthcare personnel in Dublin, Kildare, and Wicklow.[3] In 2007, the common bond of the organisation was expanded to encompass health-sector employees throughout Ireland.[3] Between 2010-2020, it merged with twelve other credit unions as part of a broader restructuring of the financial services industry.[3] In 2015, two financial co-operatives based in the centre of Cork City, St Gabriel's Credit Union, an industrial credit union run for communications and postal workers, and the CIÉ (Cork) Credit Union, merged into the HSSCU. Additional mergers included credit unions specifically for An Post and CIÉ employees, as well as the Irish Law Library.[3][4][5]
In 2020, the Dublin section implemented current accounts for over 30,000 members.[3] In July 2020, it was one of several other credit unions involved in an initiative to plant 7,000 native trees in East Cork.[6] In August 2020, the Cork HSSCU branch issued a historic €10 million in loans within one month.[7]
As of March 2024, the HSSCU had over 70,000 members.[8]
