SM Cinema is a Philippine-based movie theater chain owned by SM Prime Holdings and operated by SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc.[1]

History[edit]

Introduced in 1986, SM Cinema was the first brand of SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc., then known as West Avenue Theatres Corporation (WATC). In 2014, SM Cinema had 333 fully digitized theaters in 64 SM shopping malls in the Philippines.[2]

Specialty brands[edit]

Director's Club Cinema[edit]

Cinemas under the Director's Club Cinema brand are furbished with leather seats, offer in-house butler service, and have food menu staffed exclusively for the patrons of the cinema.[3]

IMAX Theater[edit]

SM Cinema operates 8 IMAX theaters in the country. It opened the country’s first IMAX Theater at the SM Mall of Asia in May 21, 2006.[4]

Megascreen Cinema[edit]

The Megascreen Cinema (or Large Screen Cinema in SM Seaside City Cebu) features a super-sized screen almost 30% larger than the regular cinema screen size. This format uses the Christie 6P laser projection system . The Christie 6P laser produces 80% illumination and offers a 3D platform that accurately reproduces the colors of the actual movie set. The Megascreen Cinema also devises the Dolby Atmos Sound System and Christie Vive Speakers which relies on surround-sound technology. It is available at SM City Cabanatuan, SM Seaside City Cebu, SM CDO Downtown Premier and SM City Fairview.[5] The technology in this cinema is similar to Dolby Cinema, which also uses Christie projectors.

Event Cinema[edit]

The Event Cinema is a private events venue intended for small to medium-sized parties and corporate events. It opened first at the SM Mall of Asia on December 12, 2018, at the newly renovated IMAX theater lobby, and SM Southmall on December 25, 2019, at the new cinema area at the former spaces of Cinema 6–8 at the West Wing.[6]
