SPARX Group Co., Ltd (Sparx) is a publicly owned investment management company with approximately $10 billion in assets under management as of 2017. The firm was founded by Shuhei Abe in 1989, who was the former Japanese equity advisor to George Soros' Quantum Fund.[4][5]
Sparx is headquartered in Tokyo, with offices in Hong Kong, Seoul, and San Francisco. The firm has approximately 150 employees between the global offices. [6]
Investment Strategies
Sparx uses a fundamental analysis, bottom-up approach to make its investments. [7] [8] The firm operates venture capital, renewable power plants[9], real assets, and public equity funds investing primarily in Asia Pacific[10] and Japan.
Sparx expanded into Korea in 2005, buying Cosmo Asset Management, and into Hong Kong in 2006 purchasing PMA Capital Management.[11]
Activism
In April of 2007, Sparx took an activist position in Pentax, a camera equipment company, to negotiate the merger with HOYA.[12]
In April 2017, Sparx disclosed a 5% shareholding in Teikoku Sen-i, a Japanese manufacturer of fire-fighting equipment. Teikoku Sen-i held nearly 43 Billion Yen of cash and securities holdings.[13]
In January 2018, Sparx sent shareholder proposals to Teikoku Sen-I to triple its dividend and cut board member terms to 1 year from 2.[14]
Venutre Capital
In 2015, Sparx, Toyota Motor, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., set up a 13.5 Billion Yen venture capital fund to invest in artificial intelligence, robotics, and the creation of a hydrogen based society.[15]
Renewable energy
Sparx operates 24 renewable energy projects (344MW) across Japan as of September 2017, consisting of wind, biomass, and solar.[16]
