The SUNY SAIL Institute is a leadership development think tank headquartered in Albany, New York. The Institute conducts leadership development for the 64 campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY)[1], and other institutions of higher education in the United States. Furthermore, they also undertake projects to share research and analysis to help higher education professionals to stay up to date on current and future trends.

History[edit]

The Institute was established in July, 2016 by the State University of New York with a system-wide mandate in the State of New York. This was done after a proposal was put forth to SUNY leadership about the need for a leadership development institute to be established to serve the 600,000 students and 64 campuses of the State University of New York. This effort was undertaken by prominent higher education leader Dr. Jason Lane[2], who eventually went on to serve as the inaugural Executive Director of the SUNY SAIL Institute.

The SAIL Institute was founded on the principles of creating a system-wide think tank and leadership development organization dedicated to advancing understanding and building human capacity in the areas of strategic, academic and innovative leadership. Through self assessments, workshops[3], retreats, executive coaching and other development opportunities, the SAIL Institute builds the capacity of leaders today so they can lead institutions of tomorrow.

Key areas of development[edit]

The SUNY SAIL Institute is housed in the Rockefeller Institute building in Albany, New York.

SUNY 360 is an online leadership skills inventory tool that is owned and offered by the SAIL Institute. It is one of the only 360 assessments specifically designed for higher education leaders, and is available to both SUNY and non-SUNY campuses. [4]

The Institute offers leadership retreats to candidates who are selected from a nomination process in it's Summer and Winter Leadership Retreat.[5] [6]

It goes in detail about how to confront challenging searches for recruitment in high administrative positions.[7] The SUNY SAIL Institute has partnered with Isaacson Miller consulting on this project.
