Sabin Gherman
Sabin Gherman (born 2 November 1968) is a Romanian journalist and activist. He was born and raised in the city of Cluj-Napoca, in the historical region of Transylvania. He received a degree in law from the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and began his career as a lawyer, specializing in human rights and minority issues. In the early 2000s, he became involved in politics and joined the Transylvania-Banat League, a party that advocates for greater autonomy and self-determination for the Transylvania and Banat regions.[1]
As a member of the Transylvania-Banat League, German has been a vocal advocate for the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Romania, and has worked to promote the idea of a Federal Republic of Transylvania. He has also been involved in efforts to improve relations between Romania and Hungary, and to address issues of discrimination and social inequality in the region.[2][3]
He published two volumes of verse, Phaluscriptum (1991) and Bă Ghermane (1993). In 1998, he published the article "I'm fed up with Romania" in the "Monitorul de Cluj" newspaper, an essay later assimilated as a manifesto of the ProTransilvania Foundation.[4] Between 1999–2000 he lectured at various universities in Vienna and Budapest.[5][6]
In May 2000, he became the founder and president of the Transylvania-Banat League. Currently, he is a freelance journalist and is mandated by the European Free Alliance as a rapporteur for Romania. He ran in the elections of June 6, 2004 for the position of mayor of Cluj-Napoca, as a representative of the Christian Democratic Party, obtaining a number of 652 votes, i.e. 0.43% of the votes cast.
