Biography and Activities[edit]
Sahand Noor Mohammad Zadeh is a student in Food Engineering at Islamic Azad University (Qazvin Branch) with no previous criminal record at court. Sahand was awarded the gold medal in the Iranian bodybuilding competitions (youth level 75 kg)[4].
Sahand participated in one of Iranian protests against compulsory hijab to advocate for the equality and justice in Iran. These protests became more pronounced after the sharia police brutality beat Mahsa Amini to death for not properly wearing her hijab[5] [6]. The Iran Human Right Society has reported the detailed names and addresses of 520 citizens who were killed by the Iranian regime in these protests[7], including 65 children[8]
Accusations[edit]
Sahand was sentenced to death for moharebeh which means "waging war against God" in Islamic law. TheIslamic Revolutionary Court accused Sahand for moharebeh since it is claimed that Sahand damaged and set public property on fire [9]. According to the video provided as an evidence, the public property is a trash bin, and a street guardian bar. There is no sign confirming Sahand has participated in neither damaging nor setting the fire in the published video (the video is available here).
Defenses[edit]
Here are translated parts of voice recordings of Sahand obtained from the prison. In this record, Sahand asserts "I did not neither set the trash bin on fire, nor did I damage the road guardian bar". According to this record, "the prosecuting attorney said that this person is clearly guilty from his face and has to be sentenced to death". Sahand says "I did not hurt any body. [...] I even did not know what moharebeh means, and asked the judge to explain to me what does the moharebeh means?". The judge responses "moharebeh is what you did".
