Sahat Manaor Panggabean is an Indonesian chemist and public official. He has been the Chief of Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Indonesian: Badan Karantina Indonesia, Barantin) since 14 September 2023.
Early life and education[edit]
Sahat born in Medan on 12 September 1961. He was graduated from University of Riau in 1986 with bachelor's degree in chemistry. He graduated from University of Indonesia in 2009 with doctoral degree in environmental science.[1][2][3]
He is often confused by media with another Sahat Manaor Panggabean which is an economist under Ministry of Finance serving as West Java Regional Director for State Treasury.[4][5]
Career[edit]
Sahat was an environmental chemistry researcher of the National Nuclear Energy Agency (Indonesian: Badan Tenaga Nuklir Nasional, BATAN) until finally moved to Ministry of Research and Technology shortly prior Joko Widodo presidency in 2014.[1] When Joko Widodo elected and beginning his presidency in 2014, Joko Widodo formed Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs. Sahat joined the newly formed coordinating ministry following the government recruitment.[1]
His career in the coordinating ministry was quite well and he rapidly rose to Assistant Deputy for the Environment and Maritime Disasters and finally reached rank as Expert Staff for the Connectivity Management.[6] During his time in the coordinating ministry, he developed Indonesian Maritime Health Index and Indonesian Investment Health Index.[6] In this ministry, he became one of close confidante of Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs.[7]
Appointment as Chief of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency[edit]
He was appointed by Joko Widodo as Chief of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency of 14 September 2023.[7]
