Saidullah Karimi (born 1970) is an Afghan orthopedic technician specializing in prostheses.[1]
Early life
Karimi grew up in Afghanistan in the cities of Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul. His father was a director in the Afghan Customs Department.[2]
At 18, Karimi was conscripted and assigned to medical work for the Soviet–Afghan War.[2]
After the war, Karimi established a medical shop in Mazar-i-Sharif and began to work for the United Nations Comprehensive Disabled Afghans Programme.[2]
In 1996, Karimi married his wife Shaista Karimi, a physiotherapist.[3] As of February 2024, they have four children: Said Azim, Said Rahim, Said Hakim, and Sadaf.[2]
Following the 2011 Mazar-i-Sharif attack, Karimi and his family left Mazar-i-Sharif in 2017 to Athens, Greece,[4] where they lived in an apartment funded by the Catholic social service organization Caritas Internationalis.[2]
In 2018, Karimi and his family were accepted as refugees and granted residence.[2]
Athena
Engineering experience gained from 20 years of prosthetic work granted Karimi the skill to build Athena, a humanoid robot, from various scrap materials such as old plumbing pipes and plastic water bottles.[4] Athena is 47.2 inches (120 cm) tall and weighs 17.5 pounds (8 kg).[5] Karimi designed the robot to assist with exercises to help the wounded, as well as act as a companion for children with special needs.[4]
The humanoid's appearance has been likened to that of Wall-E, the protagonist in the 2008 film WALL-E.[6]
