Saint Louis Tionól
The Saint Louis Tionól is a not-for-profit organization in St. Louis, Missouri that promotes the playing of traditional Irish music through an annual festival that includes educational workshops and concerts.
Tionól is an Irish word that means a gathering for the purpose of sharing. It is often applied to gathering of players of the uilleann pipes.[1]
Originally known as the Mississippi River Celtic Music Festival, the organization was started by Judy Stein, Michael "Piper" Cooney, and Mike Mullins in 1997. Since its founding, the goal of the Saint Louis Tionól has been to create an environment in which musicians of all levels can get together, play music, and learn from each other in an informal atmosphere.[2]
The three-day festival begins with an evening of traditional Irish music sessions, followed by a day of workshops and a more formal concert. On the final day of the festival, musicians gather for brunch and more sessions at John D. McGurk's Irish Pub in the city's Soulard neighborhood.[3]
