St. Mary of the Assumption Church is a historic Catholic church building in Biddeford, Maine. It was at one point of three Catholic churches in the Biddeford area (Saint Andre's Church, Saint Joseph's Church, St. Mary of the Assumption Church).

History[edit]

St. Mary's parish was established on the corner of Saint Mary's Street and Elm Street in Biddeford in 1853. The original church building was built in 1858. A rectory was then built in 1886, a school in 1894, and then a convent for the Sisters of Mercy a few years later. While Saint Andre's and Saint Joseph's were built to accommodate the French-Canadian Catholics, Saint Mary's was built to accommodate the Irish Catholics. In the late 1910s, the old brick church was demolished, and a new, stone church constructed. In 2009, the church merged with the neighboring churches of Saint Andre's (Biddeford, Saint Joseph's (Biddeford), Most Holy Trinity (Saco), Notre Dame de Lourdes (Saco), Saint Brendan's (Biddeford Pool), Saint Philip's (Lyman), and Saint Margaret's (Old Orchard Beach) to create Good Shepherd Parish. Shortly thereafter, the church was closed, and its final mass was held on January 1, 2009.[1]
