Saint Michael the Archangel Parish[1] is a historical and cultural landmark in the town of Lobo, Batangas, Philippines. The church is one of the oldest structures in the town and was built during the Spanish colonial period in the 19th century.

Saint Michael the Archangel Parish is a historical and cultural landmark in Lobo, Batangas The church is one of the oldest structures in the town and was built during the Spanish colonial period in the 19th century. The façade of the church is simple, with a plain pediment and an arched entrance. The bell tower is located on the right side of the church and has a square base. The interior of the church is also decorated in the Baroque-style, with beautiful designs on the altar. The altar is designed with gold being at the sides of the altar. The church has undergone several renovations and repairs over the years, but its original architectural style and design have been preserved.

History[edit]

According to the Oblates of Saint Joseph, In 1915, when the first OSJ missionaries arrived in the country, The church and the Nuestra Señora dela Merced Parish in Taysan were intrusted to them. The church was erected in November 20, 1872. It took two years to inagurate the parish in May 20, 1874. But even before the parish was established, they celebrated Saint Michael the Archangel in their chapel every May 8. The first church was made of bamboo and wood. The parish was first administered by Augustinian Recollect friars until 1902. When the Diocese of Lipa has been erected, the parish was given to a Belgian priest, Fr. Raymundo Esquinet who was also taking care of the parishes of San Jose, Ibaan, Cuenca, Bauan, Taysan and Tombol. From November 20, 1915 to March 31, 1917, Fr. Ernesto Fornaca took charge of the church until the arrival of Rev. Fr. Anacleto Encarnacion as the permanent pastor of the parish. During the 1970's a concrete edifice was built to replace the old church but it was demolished by a supertyphoon named Yeyeng. But they rebuild in 1980 to 1986.
