Sajith KUmar P P
Sajith Kumar (born 1982) is an acclaimed Indian political cartoonist, best known for his bold and incisive commentary on national and international affairs. Currently serving as a senior cartoonist with Deccan Herald,[1] he has previously contributed to leading publications such as the Hindustan Times,[2] Financial Chronicle, Outlook, and The New Indian Express. Sajith’s works are widely recognized for their sharp political critique and visual storytelling. His international cartoons are regularly featured on platforms like Cartoon Movement,[3] gaining him recognition beyond India.
He is the recipient of Kerala Lalith Kala Akademi award and has won Maya Kamath Memorial cartoon awards for excellence in political cartooning.[4]
Early Life and Education
Sajith Kumar was born in 1982 in Kannur, Kerala, to Padinjattapurayil Shankaran and Nalini Shankaran. A self-taught artist, Sajith showed an early interest in drawing and political affairs. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Payyanur College before completing a postgraduate degree in journalism from Kariavattom campus, University of Kerala.
Career
Sajith began his journey as a journalist in Kerala and soon moved to New Delhi to pursue his career in cartooning. He emerged quickly as a thought-provoking cartoonist who addressed contemporary political, social, and global issues. His visual language combines satire, minimalism, and emotional resonance—traits that have earned him a loyal readership and critical acclaim.
His tenure at leading Indian newspapers reflects a consistent commitment to editorial integrity and creative excellence. His works are frequently used in discussions on media freedom, democracy, and human rights, both in India and abroad.
