Salvatore "Sal" Anthony Tiano

Salvatore "Sal" Anthony Tiano (born 1966) is an American Managing Director and Wealth Manager for a major Wall Street firm in South Florida. He is also an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the author of "Structural Alpha: Building and Maintaining an Elite Wealth Management Practice." Publications including Forbes and Barron’s have listed him as one of America’s top financial advisors.[1]

Early Life[edit]

Tiano was born February 17, 1966 in Boston, Massachusetts[1]. He grew up in Winthrop, Massachusetts as the youngest of three boys in an Italian Catholic blue-collar family. His father was a postman and often worked two jobs. His mother was a nurse. Tiano attended Winthrop High School where he excelled academically. He was also an outstanding athlete, playing football, hockey and baseball. He served as Captain his senior year in hockey and was the leading scorer in the conference. He is a member of the Winthrop High School Sports Hall of Fame. He played hockey for, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1988 with a degree in Economics.[2]

Career[edit]

Tiano landed a job at Drexel Burnham in New York City in 1988 to train in their wealth management division. 12 months into the 18-month training program, however, the firm went bankrupt as a result of the junk bond scandal.

In 1991, Tiano joined Bear Stearns in their Boston office, and in 1994, at age 28 he became one of the youngest Senior Managing Directors in the history of the company.

Tiano helped set up an office for Bear Stearns in Palm Beach Gardens, where he moved in 2005.  Bear Stearns was acquired by JP Morgan in the financial crisis in 2008.  Tiano remained at JP Morgan until January of 2020, when he joined First Republic as a Managing Director in their Jupiter, Florida location[3]. Since leaving First Republic, he currently serves as a Managing Director for a major Wall Street firm.

Tiano was ranked 3rd on the Forbes “Best In State Wealth Advisors” list for South Florida in 2019 and 2021[4], as well as named on the Forbes 2020 and 2021 "America's Top Wealth Advisors" list. In 2018, he was also named to the “Top 100 Financial Advisors in America” list[5].  For seven consecutive years, he has been ranked among the top ten financial advisors in Florida by Barron’s, which also ranked him on their 2019 “Top 100 Advisors in the Country” list[6].  His team was also Ranked ‘Top 50 Teams in America” list by Barron’s[7].[8]

Sal has also been named to the "Palm Beach 100 - Palm Beach's Most Influential Business Leaders" list by Palm Beach Illustrated magazine in 2019, 2020, and 2021[9].

Tiano married Kim (Hendrickson) Tiano on September 7, 1991.  They have four biological children:  Salvatore (Tory), Brenna, Nick, and Alexa, and one adopted child: Will.[1]

He has been active in numerous charities and community involvement including: Co-Head Agent for Dartmouth College Class of 1988, Chair of “Friends of Dartmouth Hockey,” Board member of Palm Beach Zoo, Trustee of the Benjamin School (Chair of Investment Committee), Board Member and chair of Investment Committee of Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Palm Beach Pops, Founder of Jimmy Martello Foundation (a non-profit set up in memory of a close friend who died in the World Trade Center tragedy)[10][11].

Tiano's love for coaching and for the sport of hockey led to the establishment of Pure Hockey, a hockey-specific retail chain based out of Massachusetts. He serves as the company's co-owner, along with David Nectow, who also serves as the company's CEO[12]. Today, Pure Hockey is the largest hockey retailer in the country with over 60 locations in 20 states and over 700 employees. In 2018, Tiano and Nectow were named by the New England Hockey Journal as one of the "Top 100 Most Influential People in New England Hockey"[13].

In 2019, Tiano released his book, "Structural Alpha: Building and Maintaining an Elite Wealth Management Practice," which became a best-selling book on Amazon for release and led to him being named a featured author by Forbes' Books[14][15].
