The Mughal Governor of Punjab Zakariya Khan Bahadur committed mass murder of Sikhs on a large scale in the 18th century. The new Governor of Punjab Governor Yahya Khan appointed Salabat Khan to block Amritsar because worshipping at Amritsar by Sikhs was completely prohibited during the 1740s. Therefore, Nawab Kapur Singh appointed Jassa Singh Ahluwalia to lead the Sikh forces to liberate Amritsar from the Mughals. Some other Sikh jathas also participated in this battle. The Sikhs laid a siege and killed Salabat Khan and his nephew Nijabat Khan and took control of Amritsar in March 1748.[1]
