Salah A. Rustum Dr
Salah Asad Rustum was born in Shweir, Lebanon on September 21, 1935. He is the only son of the late Prof. Dr. Asad Rustum – Historian of the Apostolic Throne of Antioch. Salah earned both his elementary and high school education at the International College of AUB and his undergraduate studies were carried out at AUB - American University of Beirut. He graduated in 1955 and in 1958 he left for the USA where he joined MIT for his postgraduate studies and specialized in Aerodynamics. Upon his graduation, he immediately started working for Lockheed Martin where he registered two theories about flying in the upper levels of the atmosphere. At a later stage, and in view of his brilliance, Boeing approached him and made him an offer Salah could not refuse. Some of his remarkable positions were: Chairman of the Future Planning Commission of Rome Airport, Chairman of the Introductory Commission of the B747 Jumbo Aircraft, Facilitation Officer of all Italian Civil Airports and, last but surely not least, Salah was voted to become the Honorary Chairman of The Airlines Association of Rome. Upon the return of Dr. Salah Rustum to the States, he was nominated for Vice Presidency – a position he held with both pride and excellence until he reached retirement age and decided to return to his homeland, Lebanon.
During his retirement from the aviation sector, Dr. Rustum introduced in both Lebanon and the Middle East Region, the Bar Coding Symbology and made it his challenge to see bar codes displayed on every product produced. Dr. Rustum was the first person to become a Board Member of the World EAN Bar Coding Symbology Association outside the USA and Continental Europe. He even joined the Technical Groups and contributed a lot to linear products and tracing a product.
Simultaneously, Dr. Rustum started his work on the Electronic Digital Signature and became the father of both the Bar Coding and Authentication in this evolving era of ours. Dr. Rustum had actually vowed that he shall not rest before he sees Lebanon and the Middle East Region including the Arab Gulf States coupled with parts of Africa legislate intelligently to meet the challenge every nation shall meet sooner or later.
Dr. Rustum celebrated yesterday, September 21, 2023, his 88th Birthday and he still enjoys his work as if he were in his twenties. Dr. Rustum is considered a World Authority in Cyber Issues and fighting Cyber Crime, not to speak of building PKI - Public Key Infrastructure, encrypting Clouds and ensuring a safe haven to all users. CIELTECH LLC, the Company he started in the State of Qatar in 2020, is a valid proof, and of course not to mention his first Company CIEL Lebanon founded 49 years ago and shall celebrate its Golden Jubilee on October 23rd, 2024 in the City of Beirut.
Lastly, I should like to emphasize that Dr. Salah A. Rustum was and still is involved in social affairs wherever he dwelt, and did his level best to bridge the gap between the different communities of societies by education and the provision of proper education to our youngsters. Of course the liberty of speech, creed and color must not make a barrier or hindrance – Since life is in constant forward movement and there is no point called stationary in physics, we are either moving forward or going backward!
Dr. Salah A. Rustum reports to his Office every day like any active young man does.
