Professor Saleem Haj-Yahia - Biography:

Professor Saleem Haj-Yahia is a world renown international heart surgeon and healthcare leader who serves as a Professor of cardiothoracic surgery, at the University of Bristol, England and a visiting Professor at University of Glasgow U.K.

He has served until recently as the director of the heart transplant programme in Glasgow. He was also the CEO of University Teaching Hopsital (NNUH) and one of its co-founders, founder and chairman of the National Heart, Lung, Vascular & Transplant Institute and Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences. Haj-Yahia also served as deputy director of the Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Services and led the team who founded the mechanical circulatory support programme in Scotland. After obtaining his undergraduate medical education and cardiothoracic surgical training at Sheba Hopsital in tel-Aviv, he advanced further his career as a senior Transplant Surgeon at the Royal Brompton&Harefield Hospital and as a Senior Research Fellow at the National Heart & Lung Institute and at the Biomedical Engineering Department and at Imperial College London. At that time, he played a pivotal role in the transplant programme and made pioneering contributions into the surgical and clinical development of the field of mechanical circulatory support, mechanical hearts, LVADs, lung transplant and retrieval and the clinical application of modern biotechnology in medicine.

Prof Haj-Yahia led the team who performed the first successful U.K Non-Heart -Beating Donor Lung Retrieval in London,  and led the team who performed the first world Beating Human Heart Transport using the OCS- Transmedics, published pioneering surgical techniques in artificial heart surgery and published one of the largest series in LVAD Jarvik and led the team who performed the first successful LVAD transplant in Glasgow, Scotland.

He served as a senior member at the CTAG at NHSBT, a senior advisory group to the British government and at the STG senior advisory group to the Scottish Government advising the British and Scottish governments on strategies and policies related to organ donation and transplantation.

Professor Haj-Yahia was honoured with a special addition by The Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) ‘ad. Eundem’ Fellowship. He was also awarded the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow special Fellowship without examination. 

Prof. Haj-Yahia has played a pivotal role in developing the field of mechanical heart and circulatory support internationally. In addition to performing the first successful LVAD implanted in Glasgow, he serves as an international consultant for a number of institutions and governments in Europe and the Gulf countries and also as a proctor for complex heart surgery and for building and managing advanced medical institutions. As such he trained and proctored the teams who built advanced heart failure programmes and performed the first successful LVAD and mechanical pump implant in several countries worldwide including Lebanon, Saudi, Oman, Turkey, Kuwait, UAE, South Africa and others.

In addition to his surgical, scientific and leadership skills, Prof Haj-Yahia has substantial experience in building and leading advanced medical and academic medical education institutions as a university hospital CEO and Dean of faculty of medicine and health sciences. He has a significant impact on his students’ development and gives the students a particular care and support (financial and professional) promoting strong ethical, moral, humanitarian, charitable and scientific values.

Childhood and education[edit]

Saleem Haj Yahia was born in the city of Al-Taybeh in Israel, where he received his primary education and received his high school education at a church boarding school in the city of Nazareth. Technion University.[3] Salim Haj Yahya had a joint work with Dr. Magdi Yacoub.[4] Saleem Haj-Yahia has been active in a number of educational and humanitarian charities including his personal support for orphan medical students. .[5] .[6]
