Salihu Tanko Yakasai
Salihu Tanko Yakasai is a northern Nigerian activist and former social media aide to the Kano state governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. On 27 February 2021, Yakasai was arrested by Department of State Services.
Family and occupational history[edit]
Salihu Tanko Yakasai is the son of Tanko Yakasai. He got into politics at the end of 2000.[1] Yakasai is a northern Nigerian activist and former social media adviser to the Kano state governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje[2][3][4] previously holding the position of "Director General, Media and Communication".[5][6] Ganduje suspended Yakasai in October 2020 for criticizing Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari.[4]
Arrest[edit]
On 27 February 2021, Yakasai was arrested by Department of State Services (DSS) after criticizing the Nigerian government's security after over 300 schoolgirls were kidnapped in Jangebe.[7][8][9] DSS initially denied the arrest,[10] but later confirmed it and stated that the detainment was for reasons "beyond the expression of opinions in the social media".[9] Yakasai was released on 1 March.[2][10][11] Ganduje had previously suspended
