Salim Derby (Arabic: سالم دربي; died 10 June 2015) was a Libyan Islamist militia commander who led the Abu Salim Martyrs Brigade in Derna, Libya. He later served as head of the Shura Council of Mujahideen in Derna, an Islamist coalition formed to oppose the Islamic State in Derna.[1][2]
Biography
Derby was a veteran of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group and became commander of the Abu Salim Martyrs' Brigade after the First Libyan Civil War.[3]
In December 2014, he announced the formation of the Shura Council of Mujahideen in Derna, a coalition of Islamist factions established to oppose both the forces of Khalifa Haftar and the Islamic State in Derna.[4]
On 9 June 2015, following the killing of two Abu Salim commanders by Islamic State gunmen, Derby led an offensive against Islamic State positions in western Derna. He was seriously wounded during the fighting and died on 10 June 2015.[1][2]
His death contributed to increased local opposition to the Islamic State's presence in Derna.[2]
