Salim G. Sfeir is a Lebanese – Swiss banker, financier and a Chairman and CEO of Bank of Beirut. He is recognized for the Bank of Beirut expansion into 9 countries, 4 continents comprising more than 100 branches. He is the initiator and keeper of the “Banking beyond Borders” motto...[1], [2], [3].

Childhood and Education[edit]

Sfeir was born in Beirut, Lebanon. He is the son of Georges Sfeir and Mounira Ghossein and is married to Marie-Claude Asseily. He graduated in 1969 from the Université de Montréal in Canada with a B.S.S. degree in Economics, and in 1971, Sfeir received his M.B.A. Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Detroit in Michigan, United States.

Career[edit]

Early years and life[edit]

From 1972-1981 Sfeir was a lecturer of Economics, Finance and Marketing at the Lebanese University (UL) and the Lebanese American University (LAU) Lebanese American University, Haigazian University and Saint Joseph University(USJ) [4], [5].

Sfeir began his four-decade career in Finance at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Beirut in 1971. By the year 1980 he joined Banque de la Mediterranée (BANKMED) as a Deputy General Manager. Then in 1983, he formed Wedge Bank Middle East (M.E) as General Manager and a member of the Board of Directors and was appointed as Vice-Chairman and Managing Director in 1992. In 1985, he launched Wedge Bank (Switzerland), in Geneva, where he held the position of General Manager and Chief Executive till 1991. [6].

Bank of Beirut[edit]

The year 1992 was a turning point to Sfeir. He organized and implemented management buy -in of Bank of Beirut in association with Fawaz Naboulsi, Joseph Ghorra, Nar Khatchadourian and Antoine Abdel Massih. Approval from the Central Bank of Lebanon was received in September 1992, and he has since occupied the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. [7].

Since 2005, he became Chairman-General Manager of BoB Finance S.A.L in Lebanon, a Bank of Beirut subsidiary which operates a large network of financial services in Lebanon [8]. He is the Bank of Beirut Shareholder-Representative of Bank of Sydney Ltd.) In Australia since 2011 [9].

Functions[edit]

A signature theme for Dr. Sfeir has been a commitment to his Community, including particularly the youth and the Lebanese diaspora. In fact, the Bank of Beirut global network has been centered on and built around the diaspora of Lebanon. He collaborated in several universities and organizations to help the youth of Lebanon, from 2009 to 2015, and he was the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Lebanese American University (LAU) in Beirut and Byblos. Sfeir sponsored, through Bank of Beirut, a Thompson’s Reuters trading room at the University of the Holy Spirit (USEK) [10], [11] for both professional and students which gives real time and historical access to financial data and news, including information on currencies, equities, stocks, commodities, securities, derivatives and other financial data and news (link). From 2010 to 2014, He was the vice-Chairman of AMIDEAST (American Friends of the Middle East), who focuses on supporting the Lebanese youth in their pursuit of higher education and professional growth, with over 20,000 candidates each year [12].

In 2014, he was assigned Vice-Chairman to the World Patriarchal Maronite Foundation for Integral Development (WPF) founded by Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Al Rai, Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and all the East [13], [14] Its vision and mission is to consolidate and strengthen the Maronite and Christian presence in Lebanon. This Foundation aims at launching social, economic and educational programs to promote the active Christian presence in Lebanon and in the Middle East.[15], [16]

In 2015, he was elected member to the Board of Trustees at the University of the Holy Spirit (USEK) Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Lebanon.[17]. Sfeir is a Member of the Board of Association of Banks, in Lebanon since 2006 to date. [18]
