Sally Anne Gross
Sally Anne Gross is an English author, music practitioner and academic researcher.
Biography
Gross began her career as a music manager in 1990, and founded the British label Unheard Records with production duo Chapter (Aniff Cousins and Colin Thorpe) in 1993. The label found success with the Urban Cookie Collective single ‘The Key the Secret’, the remix of which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart..[1]
Between 1993 and 1995, she was the first female Managing Director and Head of A&R at Mercury Records UK, managing the label’s imprint l’Attitude.[2]
Since 2004, she has been a principal lecturer at the University of Westminster’s School of Arts, where she leads the MA in Music Business Management and teaches on several undergraduate and postgraduate music degree courses.[2]
As an academic, Gross’s research focuses on gender inequality, labour relations and mental health in the music business. In 2017, she co-authored the largest known academic study into mental health in the music industry with colleague George Musgrave. Funded by music and wellbeing charity Help Musicians UK, ‘Can Music Make You Sick?’ surveyed 2,211 music industry professionals and found that 65% of respondents had suffered from depression and 71% believed they had experienced anxiety and panic attacks.[3]
In 2016, Gross founded ‘Let’s Change the Record’, a series of audio engineering and song-writing workshops for women and non-binary people, aimed at bridging the gender gap in the music industry.[2]
She has spoken on BBC Sounds[4] and Worldwide FM[5], as well as on panels at SXSW Festival[6], BBC Music Introducing Live[7], Tallinn Music Week[8] and the London Jazz Festival[9]
